The Andaman and Nicobar Islands belong politically to India, although they are much closer to it Myanmar and Sumatra (Indonesia) lie. From the northernmost island of the Andaman Islands to the mouth of the Hugli River in West Bengal (the closest point on the Indian mainland) it is approx. 900 km, to the Irrawadi Delta on the coast of Myanmar, however, only 190 km. The southernmost island of the Nicobar Islands is only 150 km away from Sumatra.

The Nicobar Islands are not accessible to tourists.

The authorization requirement for travel to the Andaman Islands has been lifted. Registration upon arrival is required. The Nicobar Islands are still inaccessible to tourists.

So far, travel has only been possible via the Indian mainland and not directly from the closer Southeast Asian states.

Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman Islands, has an airport that is served by several companies every day Chennai, Delhi and Kolkata fly in from.

There are ship connections from the Indian mainland: Kolkata, Chennai and Visakhapatnam
