background
The western border of Tamil Nadu form the Nilgiri Mountains, they belong to the Western Ghatsthat are up to 2,637 m high. Some rivers originate in these rainy mountains and flow eastwards through the highlands of Dekkan. The rivers Godavari, Mahanadi, Krishna and Kaveri cut through the Eastern Ghats and finally reach the coastal plain.
Tamil Nadu has more than 1000 km of coastline, which is also called Coromandel coast referred to as. Its northern part borders on the Bay of Bengal and the Palk Bay, the southern on the Gulf of Mannar. In between lies the Palk Street. This strait between India and Sri Lanka is about 55 km wide at its narrowest point. The part between the Indian island of Pamban and the Ceylonese island of Mannar is called the Adam's Bridge or as Ramas Bridge designated. It is only around 30 km wide and broken through by a number of smaller islands. The sea is so shallow that large ships cannot pass this strait. This is the southernmost point on the coast of Tamil Nadu Cape Comorin with the pilgrimage town of Kanyakumari.
language
