North India is a mountainous, magical landscape shaped by the Himalayas. It offers something for both the adventurer and the spiritually inclined. This is also where the disputed region between India, Pakistan and China is located Jammu and Kashmir.

States

Himachal Pradesh:

("Area of the snow-covered mountains") extends from the north Indian lowlands and the foothills of the Himalayas to over the main ridge of the highest mountain range on earth. Much of the country is forested, in it are the Great Himalayan National Park and the Pin Valley National Park.

Uttarakhand:

(until 2006: Uttaranchal) was created in 2000 by splitting off from Uttar Pradesh. Uttarakhand consists of the mountainous regions of Garhwal and Kumaon and a small area in the Gangestal. Several peaks in the region reach heights of over 6000 m, the Bandrinath is 7139 m high, the Nanda Devi 7817 m.

Union Territories

Jammu and Kashmir:

had its own local government until 2019 and has since been ruled as a union territory centrally from Delhi. Ladakh was spun off (see below). Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan and remains controversial. In the British colonial tradition, there is a winter (Jammu) and a summer (Srinagar) capital.

Ladakh:

has been a separate union territory with the capital Leh since 2019. Until then, it was a district of the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

From traveling to Jammu and Kashmir is strongly discouraged. There is an increased risk of terrorist attacks or violent clashes throughout the Union. The communication channels (landline, internet, cellular network) are partially interrupted.

Travelers who are currently in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are recommended to leave this part of the country.

In the part of the country Jammu the security situation is basically stable. However, unforeseeable violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces are also possible there.

Keep yourself informed about the security and infrastructure situation.

Travel to Srinagar by air only if absolutely necessary.

Do not hitchhike through these areas alone or with an unauthorized guide, and do not camp in remote locations.

Avoid large crowds.

Always follow the instructions of the local authorities and security forces.

In the Union Territory Ladakh the security situation is basically stable. However, individual terrorist activities cannot be ruled out. Clashes between Indian and Pakistani and Indian and Chinese security forces can occur in the direct border regions.

Be especially careful when traveling to the western parts of Ladakh.

Get advice from trustworthy guides who are knowledgeable about the area when it comes to choosing trekking routes.

Avoid the immediate border areas with Pakistan and the People's Republic of China in Ladakh.
