background

Cow dung is dried and used as fuel in the tandoori oven

Uttar Pradesh belongs to, like Madhya Pradesh and Bihar Cow belt, the area in northern India where the worship of Holy cows is of great importance. However, the cows are not simply left to their own devices: they are used as draft animals, milk is traded on the market, clarified butter (Ghee) is used in the cremation of corpses, for temple lights or as an ingredient in many foods, and the cow dung is not only fuel in the tandoori oven, but is also used for plastering and insulating huts. But meat and leather are taboo. When visiting a temple, therefore, please do not wear leather shoes, and leather belts are often frowned upon. Before entering a temple, however, you have to take off all shoes and in front of some also your belt.
