Miraculous image

The first pilgrimage to a vicariate on the Findelberg is documented for the year 1445. The legend tells that a swineherd once found a picture of Mary while herding pigs on the Findelberg, which was put up in the parish church of Saal, but kept returning to the Findelberg, whereupon a wayside shrine was built and then a small chapel.

The high point of the pilgrimage to the Findelberg is the 17th and 18th centuries. During this period she is behind in the Diocese of Würzburg Kreuzberg and Dettelbach the third largest. Today the pilgrimage to the Marian holidays (patronage of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary on July 2nd) has a regional significance.

The center of the extensive Findelberg complex with numerous chapels, grottos and wayside shrines is the Pilgrimage Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary: The current building, it is the fifth on the Findelberg, was built between 1781 and 1786 under master builder Johann Michael Schauer and made of Wermerichshausen sandstone in Empire style. The old high altar with the miraculous image was destroyed in a fire in 1891. The current baroque high altar dates from 1733 and from the St. Nikolaikirche in Market wide. The miraculous image with the Mother of God in a halo was carved anew in 1966 by Gerhard Kessler based on a belt cutter template.

The main painting on the nave ceiling with scenes from the life of Mary comes from the grave field painter Johann Peter Herrlein, who is buried in the cemetery in front of the church.

Access is possible via a signposted road, a crossroad with sandstone stations (around 1740) leads from Saal to Findelberg on foot.

Waltershausen Castle

Waltershausen Castle

The castle has its origins as a fortified castle with a moat, which later lost its importance as a defensive structure. From 1750, under the barons of the Marschalke von Ostheim (Marschalke is the outdated form of Marschall), the initially single-storey and now three-wing, three-storey and four-tower palace complex was built. In the 18th century the park was built in the English style and allegedly under Balthasar Neumann the other upper floors with the magnificent rococo hall in the entire central building of the 2nd floor.

Charlotte Sophie Juliane von Kalb, (born Freiin Marschalk von Ostheim), German writer and born in 1761 at Waltershausen Castle, was the owner of the castle from October 1783 and after marrying Heinrich von Kalb. The poet was with Schiller and Jean Paul befriended and also had contacts with Goethe, Wieland and Herder. At the behest of Charlotte, the poet spent Friedrich Holderlin, one year as an educator for her son at Waltershausen Castle. Today it is also assumed that when Hölderlin accepted the small and quiet village of Waltershausen with the nearby town Waltershausen confused in Thuringia, his former living room in the castle has been restored.

Because of her husband's lavish lifestyle, Charlotte von Kalbs Castle was foreclosed on auction in 1806, and Charlotte von Kalb died completely desolate in Berlin in 1843. The castle changed hands several times, another well-known name is Wolfgang Baron S. v. Waltershausen, Scholar and teacher of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. He was raised by the king to hereditary nobility so that he and his descendants could use the name Sartorius, barons or barons of Waltershausen.

The castle hit the headlines in 1932 through one Murder case: the lord of the castle Hauptmann a. D. Waldemar Werther was found dead on November 30th and his wife Wilhelmine was found shot, the crime is still partially unresolved.

The castle, which was renovated between 1966 and 1968, is privately owned and can only be viewed after consultation with the owners (who live in the castle). In the ballroom there is an exhibition on the life of Charlotte von Kalb, there are also plans to expand it as a Hölderlin center.
