Sonthofen is a city in Bavarian part of Allgäu.

Sonthofen is the district town of the Oberallgäu district with 21,000 inhabitants and became the Alpine town elected of the year.

Sonthofen Can serve as a springboard for exploring the Oberallgäu, as you can reach the furthest corner of the Oberallgäu in 30-45 minutes by car. The prices are moderate compared to places like Oberstdorf or Bad Hindelangthat lie deeper in the Alps.

The city is surrounded by the tourist-oriented places Castle Hill, Bad Hindelang, Oberstdorf, fishing, Often swing and Blaichach. Administration and services play an important role in the district town of Sonthofen, not least through the Bundeswehr. Of Munich Regional trains run every hour Buchloe, Kaufbeuren, Kempten, Immenstadt to Sonthofen and then continue after Oberstdorf. Comes in every two hours ALEX (Allgäu Express), with which a change in Immenstadt is not necessary. Journey time approx. Two hours.

Of Stuttgart Trains also run over every hour Ulm to Kempten. There you usually get on a train that gets off Munich comes. Journey time approx. 2:40 hours.

In the street

From the north is the B19 from Kempten / Waltenhofen the only access road over Sonthofen continue after Oberstdorf. It is single-lane on part of the route and is therefore very busy. Especially on Friday evening in the direction Sonthofen and on Sunday afternoons heading north, it regularly builds up.

From the west you can get there via the B308 to Sonthofen. This road leads across paradise (= particularly striking vantage point). Since it goes up and down steeply there, snow chains are required there in winter when there is heavy snowfall. This is announced on the traffic radio. In the further course the B308 leads over Bad Hindelang ins Tannheim Valley.

Sonthofen itself is small enough to reach everything on foot or by bike. There is a pedestrian zone in the city center. There is a bus network that connects Sonthofen and the surrounding villages. If you want to be really mobile around Sonthofen, you have to rely on a car.

In addition to the paid, central car park at the Hirschbräu, there are also parking spaces with a parking disc, e.g. at the Anabaptist Johannis Church.
