With just under 300 inhabitants, Balderschwang is the smallest independent municipality in Bavaria. The holiday resort can be found west of Oberstdorf in the Allgäu Alps. Here the community is located at an altitude of 1044 m in the Hörnergruppe, not far from the Bregenz Forest. There are around 1200 guest beds in the small town, around four times as many as residents. 180,000 overnight stays per year prove that the place lives mainly from tourism.

Because of its snow-sure high altitude over 1000 m above sea level, the settlement is also known as "Bavarian Siberia".
