The creation of the Klosters Wechterswinkel First took place as a Benedictine monastery and is dated to the period around 1111, from around 1143 Wechterswinkel is the first Cistercian monastery in German-speaking countries as a women's monastery.
The pen was one of them Wurzburg and was very rich in the Middle Ages as the accommodation for unmarried noble daughters for a long time, but was then lifted by the Würzburg Prince-Bishop Julius Echter in 1592 with "problems with the offspring" and damage from looting in the Peasants' War and the Margravial War. The monastery property was transferred to a foundation in favor of the neighboring parishes, the Wechterswinkel monastery office continued to exist until secularization. The monastery complex was profaned and rebuilt several times in the centuries that followed.
After extensive renovations at the beginning of this century and the opening in December 2008, the monastery building is used by the district as a regional cultural and event center and for representative purposes.
Various renovations are currently underway at the provost's office (privately owned).

The Monastery church is originally a Romanesque three-aisled basilica and was consecrated in 1179. After the abolition of the monastery, they were severely dismantled, around 1811 the tower, sacristy and other parts were demolished, the central part of the church is still preserved today. Inside, the high altar (around 1680) is particularly worth seeing; it comes from a monastery Maria Bildhausen, the side altars are from 1690 (south) and 1720 (north).
On the ground floor of the convent building there is a gallery with contemporary art and the ballroom for events, on the second floor there is a collection on the history of the Wechterswinkel monastery.
