Cluj-Napoca (rum. Cluj-Napoca, hungary Kolozsvár, not M. Klausenburg) is the capital Cluj County and the unofficial capital of the historic region Transylvania (Transylvania). The city with approximately 320,000 inhabitants (2016) is very pleasant and is a great experience for those who want to see Transylvania's urban life at its best. In addition to delicious cuisine, excellent cultural activities, a great historical legacy and a great atmosphere, the city will not disappoint those who add it to their itinerary. Moreover, Cluj (as it is called for short) is so easily accessible and easy to navigate.

Characteristic

Currently, the Romanians are the largest ethnic group in Cluj-Napoca. However, this was not always the case as many different groups have inhabited the city throughout its history. The first trace of life was the Neolithic settlement from thousands of years ago. Later, the settlement was conquered and inhabited by the Romans. Archaeological remains of the Roman Napoca can be seen on Unirii Square in the city center. The Saxons took the city next: they built a wall around the city that still stands. The city has a German name Klausenburg. In the 19th century, ethnic Hungarians constituted the majority of the population and remained so until 1955. They call it the city Kolozsvár. Building non-Catholic sacred buildings in the city center was forbidden for a time, but Romanians were eventually allowed to build churches. During the communist era, other minorities migrated in order to obtain a higher standard of living, for example, the Jewish population emigrated to Israel, and ethnic Saxons immigrated to German.

Cluj-Napoca recalls its past throughout the city. You may wonder why the architecture of Cluj-Napoca is similar to that of Germany. It happened in the Austro-Hungarian period, when local architects were educated in Vienna and they came back with similar ideas. Moreover, communist buildings were located just outside the city center.

Many people still refer to Cluj-Napoca to its previous name, Cluj, since the ending "Napoca" was added in 1974 by the Communist Party.

Cluj-Napoca has emerged as a technology center that has been informally dubbed the Silicon Valley Romania. City-wide technology events include conferences that attract speakers from around the world. Technology companies mainly offer outsourcing services, but there are also startups. This continues to drive up prices in the city which are high compared to other Romanian cities but still significantly cheaper than in Western Europe.

Tongue

The official language is Romanian, Romance language. Most educated people born after around 1970 will speak fairly good English and are likely to be fluent in one or more second Romance languages; most educated people born before 1970 can speak French and Italian fairly well. Hungarian is a common language spoken by a relatively large Hungarian minority. Roma (Gypsies) speak their native Romani language as well as Romanian. Besides, as in any major city, there will be some other languages.

Drive

Getting to Cluj-Napoca is easy due to its location and the status of a large city of Transylvania.

By plane

Cluj-Napoca International Airport

Another alternative is to fly on 2 Ferihegy airport in Budapest (IATA: BUD) followed by a transfer to Cluj-Napoca. The transfer takes 6-8 hours. Many companies travel this route. Shuttle service can be found from early morning until late at night. Reservations must be made in advance, please ensure you depart at least two hours between the arrival and departure of the bus to accommodate any flight delays. Prices range from 60 to 80 lei.

Car rentals are available from Avis, Budget, Europcar and several local suppliers.

City transfer:

  • Cluj-Napoca Airport has transport links to the city center. To get there, travelers can choose between car rental, taxi, limousine and public transport (buses 5 and 8 run from 05:30 to 00:00, 2.5 lei per trip). For the public bus, exit the airport, turn right onto the main street and walk to the next bus stop. There is a ticket machine. One road to the city center costs 2.5 lei (October 2019). Remember to validate your ticket on board. You cannot buy tickets from the driver.

Highway A3 near Cluj

Cluj-Napoca has good road connections. The European road E60 connects it with Bucharest and Brasov on the south, Oradea and Budapest in the west, by Bors customs. E81 leads to Zalău and Satu Mare in the north, Brasov and Bucharest in the south. The E58 connects Cluj-Napoca with Dej, Bystrzyca, Baia Mare and Vatra Dornei.

By rail

Cluj-Napoca main train station
International trains at the Cluj-Napoca railway station

3 Cluj-Napoca railway station (Gara Cluj-Napoca). Main train station serving Cluj-Napoca. There are a few others that are not of interest to the traveler.

As with many other Transylvanian cities, the train is the easiest way to reach Cluj as it is an important Romanian railway junction. There are 4 trains a day to Bucharest and 4 trains a day to Budapest (by Oradea). There are rail connections to most Romanian and Transylvania cities, including high-speed InterCity connections to Oradea, Arad, Timisoara, Brasov, Sighisoara, Ploiesti and Bucharest.

On several routes, such as Cluj-Napoca-Oradea or Cluj-Napoca - Târgu Mureșyou can find private companies like Transferoviar groupsthat offer cheaper tickets.

It is worth knowing that there are three types of trains in Romania.

  • Regio - it's the slowest but cheapest way to go somewhere. Regio trains stop at every station.
  • InterRegio - InterRegio trains are much faster than Regio trains. As they are very convenient, many international trains are InterRegio. The ticket is more expensive than the Regio ticket, but inexpensive.
  • InterCity - the fastest and most convenient way to travel, but the ticket is very expensive.

By bus

Cluj-Napoca can be reached by bus from Bucharest, major cities in Romania, most cities in Transylvania and many large cities in Europe.

OrangeWays has modern buses that run between Budapest and Cluj-Napoca. You can catch a bus to Cluj-Napoca from Nepliget Bus Station in Budapest.

Communication

By public transport

Map of the routes of Cluj

Public transport in the city is made possible by 25 bus lines, 7 trolleybuses and 3 tram lines, all operated by the RATUC company (Regia Autonomă de Transport Urban de Călători). Most lines serving the city center do not need to wait more than 15 minutes. The tariff is 4 lei for two trips. Tickets can only be purchased for cash in special booths at most stops, which can be recognized by the RATUC logo and possibly by the words "Bilete si Subscriptione" (which means "short- and long-term tickets"). Be careful to correctly punch the unused half of the ticket in the vehicle, ticket control is relatively common and fines are high.

Transport in the Cluj-Napoca metropolitan area is served by many private bus companies, one of the most important being FANSwhich provides numerous daily connections to neighboring towns and villages.

Taxi

Taxis are relatively more expensive than in other parts of Romania, but are still cheap and very convenient. The fare is about 2.25 lei per kilometer and the same applies to the entry fee. All reputable companies charge the same price. Usually you won't pay more than 13 lei for a trip between the city center and some point in the suburbs. Payment is always made in cash and payment by credit card is not possible. As is customary, although not compulsory, the sum is rounded up to a multiple of 0.5 lei (eg if the meter shows 3.2 lei, you will probably have to pay 3.5 lei, leaving an extra 0.3 lei as tip). If you don't have the exact change, the driver can keep this tip personally, paying off the rest. If it tries to hold on too much (for example by rounding from 3.5 to 5 lei), ask for the rest.

Palace of Justice and the National Theater in Avram Iancu Square

Taxis come in all shapes and colors, and are identified by the company's logo on a plate on the car's roof, which will also be placed somewhere on the car body. Taxis are concentrated around important places in the city, and clusters are usually no more than 1 km apart. Be careful to always use reputable companies such as Atlas, Diesel Rapid, Diesel Taxi, Pritax, Nova, Terra and Fan, Pro Rapid. There may be 'shark drivers' as they call them underground who try to take advantage of strangers by overloading strangers. You should avoid them as they charge at least several times the normal fee. They mostly hang around the station and the airport. Shark drivers can sometimes “usefully” offer themselves a ride; you won't see a normal driver do it. Usually, shark drivers cars are tagged with TAXI and nothing else. Search for the company name on the car door! Respectable companies usually have several cars parked at each station; is an easy way to identify them. In addition, the price per kilometer is sometimes displayed on the cab door. It should not be more than 2.25 lei. Avoid Activ Taxi cars.

Building in the center of the city of Cluj

You can also call a taxi. Usually you have to enter your last name and wait for the car number to be communicated. The cars arrive after a few minutes.

There may be times when you take a longer drive if you are unfamiliar with the city. This can happen even in reputable companies. There is not much you can do to fix this, unless you can read a map very well, especially if you are an easy-to-spot foreigner. The best thing to do is to look confident, jump into your car and give your destination without hesitation as if you know exactly where it is.

Security

Cluj-Napoca is generally a safe city. Even after dark, it is safe to walk around the city center and some other neighborhoods. To be on the safe side, unless you know exactly where you are going and how to get there, the suburbs should be avoided at night, especially the Manastur, Marasti and Iris districts and the train station and intercity bus station areas.

You should take care of your personal belongings and pockets as always. If your wallet is stolen or lost, it will likely reappear after a while, but with no money or credit cards (so be sure to call your credit card company and block your card as soon as you notice it is missing).

Emergency numbers

As everywhere in the European Union, the police, ambulance service and fire brigade are available on number 112.
