Kössen is a community in Kaiserwinkl. In summer Kössen and the surrounding mountains are a stronghold for hang-gliders and paragliders, in winter the focus is on alpine skiing.

By plane

The nearest major international airport is that Munich Airport (140 km, approx. One and a half hours by car). Other airports that can be reached quickly are the Salzburg Airport (66 km, just under an hour's drive, second largest airport in Austria) and the Innsbruck Airport (105 km, a good hour's drive).

By train

The nearest train stations are in Kufstein on the Munich - Rosenheim - Innsbruck railway line (stop for regional trains and ICE connections) and the in St. Johann at the Giselabahn (Salzburg-Tiroler-Bahn) with connection to Salzburg.

By bus

Regional buses run from the train station Kufstein or St. Johann i. T. to Kössen. There are bus connections from Bavaria Reit im Winkl or Schleching from Prien am Chiemsee coming.

Of north Coming from Germany (toll-free): via the A8 (Munich-Salzburg) to the Inntaldreieck and further towards Kufstein, exit Oberaudorf and continue over federal road Niederndorf and Walchsee to Kössen.

A first church in Kössen can be documented for the year 1197, today's church was built in 1719 in the then contemporary Baroque style, the ground floor and the tower still come from a Gothic building that was consecrated in 1518.
The frescoes and the panel paintings were created by Simon Benedikt Faistenberger from Kitzbühel,

  • 2 Maria Klobenstein Pilgrimage church (817 m): The church at the "Klobenen Steine" is named after the split, chunky boulders below the church. The first small Loretto chapel was built in 1701 on a former hermitage; today's pilgrimage church was built in 1732/33. The church is variously counted among the most beautiful pilgrimage churches in Tyrol, also because of its wildly romantic location in a legendary place and on a popular "smuggler's path".

The Kaiserwinkl region is the wide valley floor between the Kaiser Mountains and the Chiemgau Alps, is one of the snowiest ski areas in Tyrol. Therefore, the Kaiserwinkl, also because of its easy accessibility from the Lower Inn Valley, developed into a very popular ski region.
