Nova Ponente (Deutschnofen in German) is a center of the Trentino Alto Adige.

To know

Its population is overwhelmingly German-speaking (97.42%); 2.33% Italian; Ladin 0.25%.

Geographical notes

It is a South Tyrolean center of the district Salto-Sciliar. It is 26 km from Bolzano, 29 from Egna, 25 from Cavalese, 20 from Carezza lake.

Background

The settlement is substantially medieval, due to the colonization in the high ground in the era of Mainardo II, count of Tyrol, so much so that almost all the farms appear for the first time mentioned in the great census carried out by him in 1288.

The trade with wood was one of the sources of wealth of the place since the Middle Ages. It was flourishing to the point that in 1614 wood supplied by the Tschufflerhof in Nova Ponente was even used for the construction of the attic of the cathedral of Bologna.

The toponym is attested in Latin documents such as Nova in 1175 and as Nova Teutonica in 1209, in German documents such as Teuschennoeven and Teutschenofen in 1336 and as Tawtschenofen in 1411. It derives from the Latin nova ("land recently cultivated") e Teutonic ("German").

What see

The Sanctuary of Pietralba
  • 1 Pietralba Sanctuary (Wallfahrtsort Maria Weißenstein (in German); Santuarie de Baissiston (in Ladin)), Pietralba, 9 (between Nova Ponente and Monte San Pietro), 39 0471 615165. The sanctuary was founded in 1553 after the discovery of the miraculous statuette, an alabaster Pietà, carried out by a local farmer, Leonhard Weißensteiner (hence the name of the sanctuary), to whom the Virgin Mary appeared, healing him from his illness. As a thank you, the Madonna would have asked him to erect a small church. This chapel soon became very popular, so much so that it was necessary to build a larger building.
The works began in 1638 and were completed in 1654; the convent was instead built in 1722.: This new church still includes the original chapel built by Leonhard, the high altar with leaves in gold and silver, frescoes by Adam Mölk, Pussjäger, A. Siber and F. Haider.
The place was taken over in 1718 by the Order of the Servants of Mary of Innsbruck. In 1787 the sanctuary was suppressed by the emperor Joseph II and the statuette was transferred to Laives; the church was desecrated and used as a lumber yard.
In 1836 the sanctuary, repurchased by the servants of Maria di Innsbruck, once again becomes a place of prayer; in the Fascist period the German-speaking monks were replaced with Italian-speaking monks, belonging to the servants of Maria di Vicenza, who still care for it today.
On 24 August 1885 a copy of the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows was again placed in the church, together with a procession involving over 130 priests and 15,000 believers, with the presence of the then bishop of the diocese of Trento Giovanni Giacomo della Bona. On the occasion of a visit by Pope John Paul II, the sanctuary was elevated to the dignity of a minor basilica. In preparation for the Jubilee of 2000, the youth hostel and the pilgrim's house were renovated. There are still corridors with hundreds of ex-votos at the sanctuary.
Next to the basilica, there is the chapel of San Pellegrino Laziosi, patron saint of cancer patients, and a place called "penitentiary" dedicated to confessions.
In addition to the basilica, a hotel, a pilgrim's house and a youth hostel have been built over the years. Furthermore, there is always the possibility to have lunch at a self-service restaurant and refreshment at a bar.
Among all the pilgrims who went to the sanctuary, the name of Albino Luciani stands out (Pope John Paul I), who as a child, together with his mother Bortola and the faithful from Agordino, left on pilgrimage to Pietralba. According to his custom, he spent his summer holidays there when he was still a cardinal. He booked for the last time in August 1978, but on the death of Pope Paul VI he had to leave for the solemn papal funeral and the subsequent conclave that would have elected him 263rd successor of Peter.
On July 17, 1988, the pope also went on pilgrimage to the sanctuary of the Madonna di Pietralba John Paul II. In 2003 the pope himself granted a plenary indulgence to those who visit this sacred place.
The St. Leonhard chapel
In addition to the sanctuary, climbing path number 4 towards the east for about twenty minutes, it is possible to reach the chapel of Leonhard Weißensteiner, where the sanctuary had its origin, or where the Virgin appeared. A little further down is his hermitage, a small and curious place where in the past other small cells were also built, of which only a few remains remain today. From here, going down a few steps, there is a small indentation in the rock, where Leonhard fell in 1553. From the hermitage, there is also an excellent view of the Dolomite peaks that surround the area: the Catinaccio, the Marmolada and the Latemar.
The Pietralba sanctuary can be reached mainly from:
  • the "Bolzano nord" exit of the A22, and from here following the signs for Val d'Ega and Nova Ponente (about 33 km);
  • the "Egna-Ora" exit of the A22, going up towards Cavalese to then deviate for Aldino (about 22 km).
The diatribe
The statuette of the Madonna was transferred in the 18th century to the church of San Nicolò and Sant'Antonio abate a Laives. Between the sanctuary and the citizens of Laives there is an ancient discussion that is based precisely on the statuette: when the sanctuary returned to activity, a copy of the Madonnina was made and still today there is doubt as to which is the authentic one. Every year hundreds of people leave the valleys of the Trentino, Fornace in May and Fierozzo San Felice in September, on a votive pilgrimage on foot, covering more than 50 km towards the sanctuary.
