- This region adjoins the coastal zone immediately to the west and is characterized by orchards.
- Sertão
- The Sertão is drier than the coastal zone, mainly cattle breeding is practiced here.
- Meio-norte
- On the north coast, the landscape slowly changes into the rainforest typical of the north. Here is z. B. Fortaleza

background
In addition to Portuguese, the northeast is also characterized by Dutch influences. This is due to the Dutch occupation (1630–1654). But the influences of African cultures can also be felt more strongly in the northeast than anywhere else in Brazil. Salvador was the main hub for African slaves in colonial times. Examples of these influences are e.g. B. the CandombléCult that mixes traditional West African with Catholic rites, and martial arts disguised as dance Capoeiradeveloped by African slaves.

activities
Swimming
The northeast is particularly known for its endlessly long and mostly rather flat sandy beaches. The temperatures allow a pleasant bath in the Atlantic all year round. However, some beaches are at risk for shark.
Buggy tour
The dune landscapes of the northeast are ideal for buggy tours. You sit in the open rear-wheel drive vehicle and rattle through the dunes. For nature conservation reasons, however, this is not allowed everywhere and you should therefore only ride with licensed tour guides.
carnival
The northeast is known for its street carnival. Compared to the arena carnival in Rio, this is much more attractive for visitors, as you can be better involved in the action.
kitchen
- Acarajé
- Vatapá
- Coalho cheese: a specialty of the sertão. Grilled on a skewer (Queijo assado) it is a popular snack.
A popular and cheap way to have lunch are the so-called Self-service churrascerias. These can be found on almost every street corner in the cities. There you serve yourself at the buffet with salad, rice, beans, etc. and get one or two pieces of meat of your choice. Payment is either based on the weight or the number of plates. So you can get full for less than R $ 15 per person.

security
The north-east of Brazil is one of the regions in the world with the highest rates of violence. The murder rates are even higher here than in the more affluent south. Violent crime, however, focuses on that Favelas. Tourists are mostly not affected by this, as they are well protected as an important economic factor. Visiting favelas is generally not recommended for non-residents.
climate
Northeastern Brazil has a tropical climate with a longer dry season from August to February. On the coast there are predominantly warm (20–35 ° C), but rarely hot (up to approx. 40 ° C) temperatures with high humidity. Inland it is a little drier and the temperatures are subject to greater fluctuations here. The months of August to October are considered to be the most pleasant.
