The Southern Rhineland is a not exactly defined area on GermanMiddle Rhine and Moselle valley. Other goals

The southern Rhineland borders on the North Rhine-Westphalian parts of the country North Rhine and South Westphalia, the state Hesse, the Rhineland-Palatinate part of the country Rheinhessen (With Mainz and the Nahe valley), to the state Saarland as well as on Luxembourg and Belgium.

background

The Rhine Province was already a household name in Prussia, from 1822 until the end of the First World War the area belonged to the kingdom and until the end of the Second World War it belonged to the Free State of Prussia. Until 1953 the area was administered as a provincial association, the southern part of which today, together with Rheinhessen, form the Rhineland in Rhineland-Palatinate. So it is not surprising that over the centuries a feeling of belonging to the term (southern) Rhineland has developed. Nevertheless, the boundaries are partly blurred, they go through today's urban or district areas.
