Węgrów is a historic city in the polish Voivodeship Mazovia in the Węgrów Valley at the Liwiec. The city is located in the historical region Liwer country in the eastern part of Mazovia. Later she belonged to the Drohiczyner countryPodlaskie. During the Reformation it was an important center for the Calvinists and, from the middle of the 16th century, for the Polish brothers. However, this did not spare the city from being sacked by Swedish troops in 1657. After that, the Krasicki acquired the city in 1664 and introduced the Counter-Reformation. One of the most important battles of the January uprising took place near the town in 1863. A few kilometers upstream is the old royal residence of the Mazovian princes with the remains of their Gothic castle in Liw.
