Geographical notes

The town is located at the foot of the Pler and Croce mountains on the border between the Cavallina Valley and the Seriana Valley, not far from the Endine lake to which it is connected by the Provincial Road SP40 and by some ancient mule tracks.

Background

The historic center mostly retains the structure of the past centuries, with houses made up of pebbles and masonry elements typical of medieval fortifications. Suardi family, who in those times owned much of the Cavallina valley, situation remained unchanged until the arrival of the Republic of Venice. With the Serenissima a new era began, in which the village, due to the loss of power of the noble family, was relegated to a minor role in the context of the valley.

There were also some periods in which he lost administrative autonomy, being aggregated before Ranzanico (at the end of the XVIII century) and then to Monasterolo (early 19th century). It was reconstituted in common with the advent of the Lombard-Veneto Kingdom, to be merged again with Spinone in the year 1927. Only on 11 April 1955 was it definitively reconstituted as an independent municipality. Similarly to the neighboring municipalities, the town in recent years has experienced a notable tourist-residential development, mainly concentrated in the area above the historic center and in the vicinity of the municipality of Gaverina Terme.

How to orient yourself

Bianzano, given its small population, does not have proper fractions. However, there are several places of a certain naturalistic interest. Many of them stand out for the fact that they bear names that have not yet been Italianized. Among them, there are: the Valle Rossa localities (on the border with the municipality of Cene), Torè and Dos Martì, as well as the small pond, fed by a spring, known as Valöcc. Near the latter there are some rocky leaps known as Scalù del Diaol (literally, "Scaloni del Diavolo").

  • 1 Suardi Castle, via Chiesa 1. The date of construction of the castle should go back to the year 1233, as reported on a stone placed on the right shoulder of the portal of the courtyard; however, there are no other documentary sources. Already from the fourteenth century it was owned by the Suardi family. The first act referring to the castle dates back to that period, concerning an event of great importance: in 1367 Giovanni, belonging to the Suardi family, married Bernarda Visconti, daughter of Bernabò, regent of the Duchy of Milan, receiving the castle itself as a gift. Even today this event is at the center of a historical re-enactment, which takes place on the first weekend of August, which involves the entire village and attracts numerous spectators.
No significant episode occurred until the arrival of the Republic of Venice which, in order to put an end to the struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines, ordered the destruction of all the fortifications. The Suardi family, in order to avoid the demolition of the castle, decided to eliminate the battlements and cover the entire structure with a roof, thus making it a stately home. Subsequently, the building underwent other alterations: the cellars were enlarged, an operation which later proved unfortunate, since it caused the partial collapse of the structure downstream.
Located in a dominant position on the western side of the Cavallina Valley, from which it was possible to check both the road coming from Val Seriana through the Valle Rossa that the one that connected Bergamo with the Lake Iseo and the Val Camonica, offers a great view of the Endine lake and on Monte Torrezzo.
Inserted on the edge of the medieval village of Bianzano, it has a square plan structure, with its diagonals facing towards the cardinal points. Externally it is protected by two walls that form as many terraces placed on two different levels: the first has sides parallel to those of the castle itself, with small towers (only partially preserved) placed in the center of each of them, while the second, of irregular shape, it has a turret at each of the four corners.
The entrance consists of a high tower, at the base of which there is a cycle of frescoes dating back to the mid-fourteenth century, which also continue in the internal atrium. In this small courtyard, equipped with a gallery on three of the four sides, there are other paintings representing the four virtues, some cherubs intent on playing and dancing, as well as some ornamental motifs consisting of black and white rhombuses, symbol of the Visconti family. The building also has numerous mullioned windows composed of different ogival arches. Bianzano Castle on Wikipedia Bianzano castle (Q3662488) on Wikidata
