Castles, chateaux and palaces

  • For a long time, local researchers suspected the original palace complex at the site of the later prince-bishop's palace and transferred the name Imperial Palace on the building that is still called that today. The prince-bishop's palace was built by Bamberg's prince-bishop Lambert von Brunn in the 14th century as a second residence. Inside he had it decorated with wall paintings by Bohemian artists. In the 16th century, the building was expanded into a four-wing complex with an inner courtyard and painted with wall paintings by the Bamberg court painter Jakob Ziegler. Because of the unique building structure and the wall paintings, which are among the most important in southern Germany, the imperial palace is of national importance. The building has housed the Palatinate Museum since 1911. Extensive renovation measures from 1998 to 2004 brought the historical building structure to light again.
