Guttenberg is a place in the district Kulmbach in the Bavarian administrative district Upper Franconia at the edge of the Franconian Forest.

Guttenberg is known as the ancestral seat of the zu Guttenberg, an old Franconian noble family from which the conductor Enoch zu Guttenberg, or the former Federal Minister Karl-Theodor Freiherr von und zu Guttenberg came from. With fewer than 600 inhabitants, the place is the smallest independent municipality in Upper Franconia.

Tourist Attractions

  • 1  Guttenberg Castle (Neuguttenberg). The castle, visible from afar, is privately owned and cannot be visited. The castle is grouped around an irregular courtyard, the core dates from the second half of the 15th century. It was destroyed in 1523 and 1631 and rebuilt until 1661, there were renovations in the 18th century, after a fire in 1908 it was rebuilt.

  • 2  Middle lock, Kirchweg 6. The former Middle Castle is the so-called Green Castle and Middle House, today the Baron von Guttenbergsche Rentenverwaltung.
  • 3  Lower lock, At the bee garden 2. At the bend in the street in the lower village stands the age-gray walls, it used to be the lower castle of the von Guttenberg family.
  • 4  Good Breitenreuth. Baroque estate.
  • 5  Castle Church of St. George. Evangelical Lutheran parish church from 1800.

Hiking trails

There is a network of signposted hiking trails around Guttenberg. There is a display in front of the castle.

  • Circular hiking trail over the Pfaffenreutherhöhe, with views of the Fichtelgebirge, Vogtendorf and Möhrenreuther Weiher. Length 8.5 km, walking time about 3 hours.
  • Circular route via Buch to the Eeg wildlife park, back via Neuenwirtshaus-Messegrund or via Vogtendorf, delightful views, length 6 km, walking time 2 1/2 hours.

In the district of Eeg there is a fallow deer and wild boar enclosure with a large playground.

In winter Guttenberg has a cross-country ski run.

  • Wirsberg (10 km southeast, B 303) - climatic health resort in the extreme southeast of the Franconian Forest Nature Park.
  • Neuenmarkt (11 km southeast, B 303) - right across from Wirsberg, whose steam locomotive museum is an important national destination.
  • Kulmbach (13 km southwest, B 303 / B 289) - the next big city is the district town of the district of Kulmbach, with breweries and Plassenburg with a tin figure museum.

literature

  • Lazar-Christoph from Lippa wrote a book about life at Guttenberg Castle in the first post-war years. The title of the book is Ubi Mona ibi bene, published by Bonn in 2012.
