Thurnau is a market in the district of Kulmbach in the Bavarian administrative district Upper Franconia. Thurnau is known for its pottery and its historic town center with a castle. Thurnau is a member municipality of "Romantic Three"KasendorfWonsees - Thurnau.

Carl von Linde (ennobled in 1897), engineer, inventor and founder of Linde AG, was born on June 11, 1842 in Berndorf, a district of Thurnau, as the third of nine children of a Protestant pastor. He spent the first years of his childhood in Upper Franconia

Thurnau is on the Motorway A 70which leads from the Bayreuth / Kulmbach motorway triangle via Bamberg to Schweinfurt. Thurnau has two exits: Thurnau-East and Thurnau-West.

  • 7 Aubach source Near the Menchau district, a gem from the past. Around the circular sandstone frame, there are three stone benches that invite you to rest. In the spring shaft you can see the swirling of the sand at the points where the water pushes out of the ground.
  • 8 Tanzlinde Limmersdorf The Tanzlinde in the district of Limmersdorf an der Kirche was planted sometime in the 17th century. The linden tree is around 16 meters high with a trunk circumference of about five meters. The dancing takes place at a height of approx. 4 meters.

The Christmas pottery market

At the three annual parish markets in spring, summer and autumn on the market square, potters from Thurnau and the surrounding region are represented alongside many other Fieranten. The Christmas pottery market, always on the 2nd weekend in Advent in Thurnau Castle, is a purely ceramic specialty market, which, with 50 international master craftsmen, presents the whole variety of traditional ceramics in Central Europe: stoneware, earthenware, porcelain, raku, ash fire, salt glaze, utensils, unique items ... Admission to the Christmas pottery market in Thurnau Castle is free.

  • The Gregorius Festival is in July.
  • On the Sunday after July 25th is the main church consecration.
  • The Limmersdorfer Lindenkirchweih has existed since at least 1729. The focus is on the historic dance linden tree from the 17th century, on whose branches people dance on a dance floor. It is carried out on the days of Bartholomä (August 24th). It begins on Thursday and ends on Tuesday with the funeral of the parish fair.

The cuisine is hearty Franconian. At the church fair there is always horseradish, boiled pork and beef with a spicy horseradish sauce and potato dumplings. In the municipality, fruit trees are marked with a yellow band. From these trees the owner allows the harvest of the fruits for everyone.
