Wonsees is a market in the district Kulmbach in the Bavarian administrative district Upper Franconia. Wonsees is a member of the "Romantic Three" - Kasendorf - Wonsees - Thurnau.

In 1323 Wonsees was raised to the market. Today it consists of the following districts: Feulersdorf, Gelbsreuth, Grossenhül, Kleinhül, Lindenmühle, Plötzmühle, Sanspareil, Schirradorf, Schlötzmühle, Wonsees and Zedersitz.

The garden was created at the instigation of the Margravine Wilhelmine, a sister of the Prussian King Friedrich II. The rock garden is freely accessible, the museum in the oriental building and the castle café in the kitchen building are open from April to October. The name is said to go back to the exclamation of a guest "C'est sans pareil" - "This is beyond compare". Sanspareil is pronounced decidedly non-French by the locals, if you pronounce it as it is written and replace the "p" with a "b", you will be understood everywhere.

The parish offers free guided tours for individuals and groups who register in advance.

  • The Bayreuth studio stage organizes several performances in the ruin theater in Sanspareil at the beginning of August. The spectators sit on chairs, beer benches and beer tables under a rock. The performance takes place without electricity, musicians sit in the orchestra pit with real instruments, the lighting consists of kerosene lamps, torches and candles. As a spectator, you shouldn't forget a flashlight for the way home through the park.   • In OT Sanspareil there is a parish fair on Sunday at June 24th
  • The sheet cake festival takes place in the OT Großenhül at the end of August. On Sunday afternoons there are around 100 different cakes from the tray. A cup of coffee and a piece of cake cost € 2.50 (2017) and there are also snacks.
  • In Wonsees there is a parish fair on the 3rd Sunday in September
  • In the OT Sanspareil there is a parish fair on the Sunday after the national mourning day

The cuisine is Franconian, hearty. At the church fair there is always horseradish, boiled pork and beef with a spicy horseradish sauce and potato dumplings.
