Background
Scottish captain John Clunies-Ross landed in the Cocos Islands in 1825. He proclaimed himself king and began construction of "Oceania House", a royal residence, West Island, capital of the archipelago. He favored the immigration of Malaysian groups who integrated with the locals.
They constituted, from 1827 to 1978, an autonomous kingdom, of a feudal type, under the protectorate of Great Britain is Australia.
The Clunies-Ross issued stamps, coins (Cocos rupee) and banknotes, which are still highly sought after by collectors.
After the second war, Great Britain handed over the Cocos protectorate to Australia. In 1970 there was a succession crisis and the Australian government even sent a warship which in 1978 put an end to the feudal reign of the Cocos, however granting a fair amount of autonomy.
Since 1992 it has been part of the constituency of the Northern Territories of Australia.
Spoken languages
