History

The flag on the mountain

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (Turkish: Kuzey Kıbrıs Turk Cumhuriyeti; Greek: Τουρκική Δημοκρατία της Βόρειας Κύπρου), in short Northern Cyprus, is a on the northern part of the Mediterranean island Cyprus located Turkish Republic that only by Turkey is recognized. The rest of the world formally considers this occupied territory of the Republic of Cyprus. In fact, also acknowledged Bangladesh and Pakistan very soon the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, but under pressure from the United States in particular, they had to withdraw their recognition. Negotiations are currently underway with the European Union to lift Northern Cyprus out of its economic isolation.

The area covers 3355 km² (one third of the island of Cyprus) and is mainly home to Turks, the majority of whom are originally Turkish Cypriots or partly Turkish Cypriots. Settlers from Turkey form a large minority. During the occupation, many Greeks fled to the south of the island - or were expelled to the south - and almost the entire Turkish minority from the south fled to the north - or were expelled to the north. The reason for the occupation was that Greek Cypriots - who formed the majority at 77% - aspired to enosis, unification with Greece. To achieve this goal, some Greek Cypriots, with the support of the junta then in power in Greece, staged a coup d'état, which Turkey saw as a threat to the Turkish Cypriot population. This was followed in 1974 by a Turkish invasion and in 1983 the part occupied by Turkey declared itself independent under the name Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. And since then there is its own Flag of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

This flag is largely based on the flag of Turkey, with which the country has close political and cultural ties. In the original 1984 design, the Turkish flag was used with two white stripes over it. The following year, the colors were reversed, resulting in the current flag.

Along the road from the Cypriot capital Nicosia nasty Kyrenia a huge Turkish Cypriot flag can be seen. This flag is made of lime and is displayed by lamps when it is dark. The flag is located in the mountains above Nicosia, making it easy to see from the city, which is seen as a provocation by the Greek Cypriots.

Included next to the flag is a quote from Atatürk "Ne Mutlu Türküm Diyene".
