The area of the quay has a size of almost 670,000 m² and has nine pier, it is located on the Trave, which a short distance further in Travemünde in the Baltic Sea flows out. Goods are also loaded onto the ships at the Skandinavienkai; the quay was expanded and modernized in 2006 and 2007. From 1975 to 2005 there were trains from Travemünde to Hanko and Turku Railway ferries of the RAILSHIP. These were equipped with standard gauge tracks on 3 loading decks, the gauge change to the Finnish broad gauge took place in Finland.
Various Cruise ships run to Travemünde every year. The “Ostpreußenkai” cruise terminal is located right in the heart of Travemünde on the “Vorderreihe” street with a view of the “Passat” on the opposite side of the Trave. It is not part of the Skandinavienkai. However, only cruise ships up to 200 m long and 25 m wide can moor at the “Ostpreußenkai”. Larger cruisers therefore dock at the Skandinavienkai. As the largest cruise ship to date in Travemünde, the MS "Queen Elizabeth" of the Cunard shipping company was a guest at the Skandinavienkai.
The entire terminal is locked and not accessible to the public. This is for visitors and passengers 1 Harbor house the central dispatch point.
