Walldürn is one of the most important German pilgrimage sites, the tradition of pilgrimage goes back to that Blood miracle in the year 1330. The history of the place begins, however, already in the time of the Romans, first documented mention of Thin can be found in the year 794. In Staufer times the place belonged to the Lords of Dürn, after the extinction of this noble family it came to Kurmainz. From 1423 the place name changed to Waltdürn, in the end it became Walldürn. In 1806 Walldürn came to the Grand Duchy of Baden.

Since the municipal reform around 1975, the formerly independent municipalities Altheim, Gerolzahn, Glashofen, Gottersdorf, Hornbach, Kaltenbrunn, Reinhardsachsen, Rippberg and Wettersdorf belong to Walldürn. Neighboring places are Book, Hardheim, Höpfingen and Rosenberg in the Neckar-Odenwald district as well as the places Amorbach, Eichenbühl and Schneeberg in the Bavarian Lower Franconia.
