Geeste is a municipality in the district Emsland in Lower Saxony. Geeste has the status of a unified municipality.

Map of Geeste
The area around Geeste and the rest of the Emsland was settled early on. Large stone graves from the Stone Age (3300 - 2500/2200 BC) testify to this. The most recent excavations repeatedly bring to light shards of the kind found in the megalithic graves by the tens. Already in the 1930s there was a Neolithic single grave from the time between 2800 and 2500/2200 BC. has been proven. Place names of old settlements on the course of the river Ems can be found for the first time in written documents in the course of Christianization since 780 AD. The first mention of Geestes contains a document from around 890 that mentions the burning of Geestes by the Normans.
At the beginning of the last century, today's districts, mostly politically independent communities, were small villages with few inhabitants. In the 1960s, some communities had made their own efforts to combine into larger units. In 1968, Groß Hesepe and Klein Hesepe merged to form the parish "Groß Hesepe"; In 1971, Dalum, Geeste and Osterbrock joined forces on a voluntary basis to form the "Geeste" community. 1974 also incorporated Groß Hesepe, Bramhar, Varloh and Bienerfeld-Nord into the new municipality of Geeste. The seat of the administration is not in the district Geeste, but in the district Dalum, which also has the largest population.

By boat
- The Ems meanders through the middle of the municipality of Geeste and is ideal for traveling by motorboat or canoe.
- Between Lingen (Ems) and Meppen the Dortmund-Ems Canal runs through Geeste with almost no bends. It is also accessible with motor boats or canoes. The inland shipping regulations apply on the Dortmund-Ems Canal. Far more beautiful in terms of landscape, however, is the drive over the Ems.

St. Isidor Osterbrock
Ecumenical motorway chapel
- 1 St. Nicholas, Great Hesepe (cath.), Pastor-Wekenborg-Strasse, 49744 Geeste, OT- Groß Hesepe. Visible from afar with its high tower, the 800-year-old St. Nicholas Church stands in the center of the Groß Hesepe district. The old church was built over centuries in three large building phases as a Gothic hall church. Inside, among other valuable art treasures, there are Gothic ceiling paintings, a late Baroque high altar and a late Baroque pulpit (based on designs by J.K.Schlaun). This old church received an extension in 1938/39 to accommodate the growing number of believers. The back wall of the choir is decorated with a crucifixion group in mosaic technique, the nave with ornamental picture windows. The ambo, tabernacle stele and altar were created on the occasion of the post-conciliar redesign in 1980 by the artist Krautwald from Rheine. The St. Nicholas Church is used as a parish church by the faithful from the districts of Groß-Hespe, Klein-Hesepe, Torfwerk and Moormitte. Since 2006 the St. Nicholas Church has been one of the four parish churches in the Geeste parish association.
- 2 St. Isidor Osterbrock (cath.), Kirchweg, 49744 Geeste, OT-Osterbrock. In 1915 the Harpener-Bergbau-AG built a first chapel. For many years this chapel served alternately Catholic and Protestant Christians. In 1934 it was expanded due to the sharp increase in the number of residents. The current parish church of St. Isidor was given its current form in 1955 after extensive renovations and extensions. Since 2006, the St. Isidor church has been one of the four parish churches in the Geeste parish association.
- 3 St. Antonius Geeste (cath.), Antoniusstrasse 3, 49744 Geeste. The first chapel is mentioned in 1651, but it should have been much older. It was rebuilt after a fire in 1727. The current parish church of Geeste was built between 1963 and 1966. In 2002 the church was extensively renovated and refurbished. The outer masonry and the inner ceiling were completely renewed.
- 4 Christ King Dalum (cath.), Lingener Strasse 6, 49744 Geeste, OT-Dalum. The center of the parish of Christ the King Dalum is the Christ the King Church in the middle of the Dalum district. The church was built in 1931 and can still be seen almost unchanged in the tower and the nave. In 1956 it was extended with a transept and choir. Both the structured brick structure and the simple interior are convincing in terms of shape and design.
- 5 Pauluskirche (ev.-luth.), At the Schaftrift 46, 49744 Geeste, OT-Dalum. The church from 1950 was realized as a so-called series emergency church made of prefabricated parts. Whoever enters the Pauluskirche feels soothing warmth. This impression comes from the amount of wood: wooden floors, wooden ceilings, wooden pillars and benches. The chancel can be completely closed by two double doors. Today the church is a listed building.
- 6 Markuskirche Groß Hesepe (ev.-luth.), Markusstrasse 51, 49744 Geeste, OT-Groß Hesepe. The Markuskirche, built in 1967, belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Parish Dalum and is the "daughter church" of the local Pauluskirche. Even if it is a small “village church”, there are some artistic treasures to be discovered in it. The St. Mark's Church appears in a form that can be described as traditional and yet it embodies a special idea: the bell tower appears stretched into the sky like an oil tower, and next to it the nave like a pile of peat sod.
- 7 Johanneskapelle Dalum (ev.-luth.), Settlement 22, 49744 Geeste, OT-Dalum (in the sidlung "Big Sand"). The small Johanneskapelle, which was built in the middle of the fields in 1938 by the first Protestant settlers in Dalum-Großer Sand, is, so to speak, the “mother church” of today's Evangelical Lutheran. Parish Dalum. The simple chapel became the new spiritual home and center for Protestant Christians in the Protestant diaspora, who came to Dalum as part of the settlement before the Second World War.
- 8 Motorway chapel "Jesus, Bread of Life" (ecum.), at the Hesepe Moor rest area on the A31 (only accessible in the south direction). The chapel is on the A31 Emden-Bottrop, between the Twist and Geeste junctions at the “Heseper Moor” rest area. Two modern buildings with over 2500 m² of exhibition space invite you to travel back in time to the worlds of past life and work. The exhibitions provide information about the habitat of the moor and its settlement. Using preserved peat cutting and processing machines, the arduous work in the bog, but also the technical progress in conflict with nature conservation, is documented. In addition to a renatured high moor area, a settler's farm can also be visited on the 30 hectare outdoor area. Old breeds of domestic animals are kept there and a farm garden is cultivated. The whole thing is complemented by an old and a newly inaugurated fruit tree meadow. In the meantime, around 100 fruit tree trees provide a lot of fruit, but also provide an authentic image of a settler's farm around 1920. A café with regional specialties, such as buckwheat pancakes or buckwheat beer, take care of the physical well-being. The Emsland Moor Museum has attractive offers for groups in particular. - 11 Geeste reservoir. The Geeste storage basin was made necessary by the construction of the nuclear power plant in Lingen. Thermal power plants constantly need large amounts of cooling water in order to condense the no longer usable steam behind the turbine. Since this amount may not be taken from the Ems at times of low water, the storage basin was created 12 km north of the power plant. It was the declared aim of the planners to create what is technically necessary in harmony with nature. An ecological compensation should therefore be created from the outset for interventions in the natural balance. One of the essential elements of the ecological replacement measures is the 50 hectare wet biotope. At the same time, the reservoir is a recreational area with numerous leisure opportunities. All paths around the lake were laid out as cycle and footpaths. In the bathing bay, the beach and the sunbathing lawn create a holiday atmosphere. The crest of the dam also offers ideal wind conditions for hang-gliders, sailors and surfers. After building a halfpipe the increasing number of inline skaters has an attractive practice route. Inline skating enthusiasts who prefer to forego acrobatics can rent skates by the hour and glide along the shores of the lake.

- 14 Emslandlager, camp XI - Groß Hesepe, Kirschenstrasse, 49744 Geeste, OT-Groß Hesepe. During the time of National Socialism, the Emsland camps were located in Heseper Moor, in which mainly prisoners of war were imprisoned. Camp XI - Groß Hesepe - was also closed at the end of the war. Today the Lingen correctional facility is located on the site, Groß Hesepe branch. A plaque commemorates the camp today.
- 15 Emslandlager, Camp XII - Dalum-Rull, Rull 32, 49744 Geeste, OT-Dalum. The Emslandlager XII was converted into a War cemetery transformed. A bronze plaque behind the entrance says: “This is where Soviet prisoners of war rest in mass graves, whose names are unknown. Their number is estimated at 8,000 to 16,000 ”.

- 1 Dalum-Wietmarscher Moor (Viewing hill), Süd-Nord-Straße, 49744 Geeste, OT-Dalum. In the northeast of the 1,580 hectare Dalum-Wietmarscher Moor nature reserve there is a viewing hill from which the moor can be viewed. The nature reserve places a raised bog area under protection, which at the time it was placed under protection was partly still pelted industrially. The areas that can be overlooked from the viewing hill were peated industrially by August 18, 2016. Parts of the peat bog areas in the protected area are already rewetted and can regenerate. As a bird sanctuary, the nature reserve is of particular importance for waders and meadow birds.

- The Museum tour leads over 40 km to the moor museum, to a settler farm via the moor energy adventure trail. The destination of the adventure trail is the petroleum and natural gas museum in Twist.
- The 35 km long See (h) tour links different natural areas on both sides of the Ems north of Lingen. The tour begins at the Geester reservoir: past the particularly pronounced meanders of the Ems, the tour leads to the Wachendorf nature discovery trail.

Die bereits erwähnten Lager in Groß Hesepe and Dalum waren nur 2 der ehemals 15 Konzentrations-, Straf- und Kriegsgefangenenlager im Emsland. Tausende von Menschen wurden in den Lagern gefangen gehalten, darunter zahlreiche „politische Gefangene“, die den Nationalsozialisten bei der Durchsetzung ihrer Herrschaft im Wege waren. Von den ehemaligen Emslandlagern ist kaum mehr etwas im Gelände zu sehen. An den Standorten der ehemaligen Lager geben heute Informationstafeln Auskunft über die jeweilige Lagergeschichte. Die Gedenkstätte Esterwegen ist ein europäischer Gedenkort, der an alle 15 Emslandlager und ihre Opfer erinnert. Im Besucherzentrum befinden sich heute die Ausstellungen, Seminarräume, eine Bibliothek, ein Archiv sowie eine Cafeteria.
