Background

Historical map of Plzeň
View of Plzeň from the cathedral

The city was founded in 1295 at the behest of King Wenceslaus II, although it had already been mentioned as a castle in 976, as the site of the battle between Duke Boleslaus II and Emperor Otto II. This oldest nucleus is today represented by the district of Starý Plzenec;

The city developed, then, quickly, becoming an important center of trade due to its position, at the crossroads of various trade routes. In the fifteenth century, as part of cultural investments, the city equipped itself with the first printing house of the Republic Czech and the first printed book dates back to 1468.

In the last years of the 1600s, on the other hand, when the ancient demographic explosion ended, the architectural and artistic one began in a broad sense, which resulted in the decoration or remaking of many city monuments with the classic Baroque stuccoes. In the same period, the city was besieged by the Swedes, who had won over more than thirty years of war.

Another fundamental capital of the history of the city is that which concerns the production of beer. The city had been producing it since the 12th century. Over time, this product became the main source of income and the main product of the city. Many produced beer at home but the quality left much to be desired, so much so that in the archives there is mention of some local producers who added to the ingredients the most disparate and "not very tasty" elements including animal urine, earth to make it darker, but also honey, cereals and more.

The risk that arose was that foreign trade decreased rapidly due to the bad quality of the beer produced, so much so that a real revolt broke out starting from 1838 whose goal was to force the city to build public breweries. , vetted by officials who made sure they were looking for a "perfect recipe" of beer, controlled its production and revived the popularity of the local beer. Hundreds of determined citizens emptied their barrels by pouring beer on the street or in the rivers until they got heard. The task was entrusted, by the authorities in Plzeň, to the producer Joseph Groll who produced the first brewed beer in 1842. has refined and even the public brewery has grown to become a must see on a visit to the city.

In 2010 and 2015 Plzeň was honored with the title of European Capital of Culture; its city center has also been considered a cultural heritage since 1989.

Football fans appreciate its proximity to the football stadium, not far from the park Štruncovy.

What see

The Old Town will take you back to the glorious past of the city, as little has changed in style, buildings and spaces since the city was founded. Namesti Republiky (Piazza della Repubblica), is the main meeting place for the inhabitants and the seat of major events.

Part of the city wall at the Krizikovy sady

The city wall that surrounded the old city was demolished in the 19th century and replaced by green areas that still surround three quarters of the historic center.

Breweries

Beer production was revolutionized in the mid 19th century with a new brewing process created in Pilsen; called the method today Pilsner or abbreviated Pils. Brewing here dates back to the 12th century, but the historical events that took place in 1838-1839 led to the birth of the first city brewery controlled by the authorities and entrusted to the producer Joseph Groll, who invented cooked beer, a beer now famous as Pils ; the bitter drink of golden color, with a snow-white foam.

Today, small breweries are lively and dynamic places that connect the traditional production process with the pleasure of tasting. Not infrequently they organize thematic tours with a lot of tasting included. If you are a beer lover, you cannot forget to visit the large breweries, such as those of the company Plzeňský Prazdroj a.s. with the brewery Gambrinus and the best known brewery Pilsner Urquell; here, by booking a guided tour, you can see the entire production process, and learn a little about its history. In the brewery Gambrinus guided tours are only in Czech.

For the end, let yourself be a real jewel of beer production; visiting the historic cellars of the breweries, you can enjoy freshly brewed, unpasteurized beers straight from the barrel. In the brewery in the famous Spilka restaurant you can also enjoy a lunch.

In addition to the factories of the large breweries, visit some small local breweries.

How to keep in touch

Internet

Prague, a city often referred to as "magical", is a city with a centuries-old history, a vast culture and a thousand possibilities for entertainment.

On the way to Prague there are many ancient and fascinating centers, which would be worth visiting, even if only for a few hours. Between these:

  • Beroun - or Beraun in German, a town 30 km from Prague and 60 km from Plzeň. Beroun is one of the stops of the Plzeň-Prague train, which makes it easier to reach. In its territory you can admire many Gothic-style buildings, the remains of the ancient city and a curious zoological garden, the Medvedarium, where some bears live in captivity.
Fortress of Karlštejn
  • Karlštejn - or Karlstein in German, about 70 km from Plzeň, it hosts one of the most beautiful castles in Europe and on its territory, magnificently anchored to the rock formations of the area, there are some noteworthy monasteries.

On the other side, in the direction of the Bavaria not far from here, you will find some important centers and some fortifications of the Bavarian forest. Among these we recommend:

  • Cham - or Kouba in Czech, with its magnificent old town and the church of St. Jakob.
Singing Fountain in Mariánské Lázně
  • Mariánské Lázně - or Marienbad, the city with the Singing Fountain, is a town on the border with Bavaria, a famous destination for Russian and German tourism. Here there is a famous "musical" fountain which performs particular water effects at every hour accompanied by 10 minutes of good music.
  • Loket - or Elbogen in German, it is a tiny town with a jewel set within its walls: the castle of Loket.
  • Karlovy Vary - or Karlsbad, a city of German tradition incorporated into Bohemia, has staked everything on its splendid architecture. Here you will find beautiful churches, colonnades and monuments. The city is also very active and during the year many festivals are organized including that of folklore and that of cinema.

Old town hall

Tongue

Apart of course the Czech, very many in Plzeň speak theEnglish and almost all also the German, therefore you will always find guides in at least these three languages; if, then, you turn to the older ones, it is possible that they know the Russian, which, however, for historical reasons, it is not recommended to use.

  • 37 Information center of the city Plzeň (Informační centrum města Plzeň), Náměstí Republiky 290/41, Vnitřní Město (to the left of the town hall, Magistrát in Czech), 42 378 035 330, @. Simple icon time.svgApr-Sep: 09: 00-19: 00, Oct-Mar: 09: 00-18: 00. Almost all information, from maps to show times, can be requested from this office; in the same square you will also find public toilets. If you can't go to this office there is also a branch inside the central station.
