background

Müllner-Peter

Huber Peter (1766−1843), named after his profession as a Müllner, is the most famous resident of Sachrang. He was born on June 29, 1766 as the fifth of seven children of the miller Georg Huber and in Sachrangs Parish Church of St. Michael baptized. He lived on his parents' property from his birth until his death on August 19, 1843.

The gifted child was supposed to study first and presumably become a pastor. He returned to the parents' farm before graduation and took over the mill. Here he became a choirmaster and began to compose himself. He is considered a spirit of enlightenment, spoke several languages, worked as a medicin for humans and animals without any quackery, had a fully equipped pharmacy and was also involved in astronomy. His private life was less happy: he married the neighboring daughter Maria Hell, but the marriage remained childless and his wife drowned in a flood in the Prien in 1824.

"The Müllner Peter von Sachrang" was initially a novel by the writer Carl Oscar Renner (1908-1998), the motifs of the novel were then based on the script by Oliver Storz as a three-part series "A Chronicle from the Mountains" made into a film, directed by Wolf Dietrich. It was first broadcast on December 26th, 1978 on ARD, with up to 16.3 million viewers, the ratings hit was the most successful in-house production of Bavarian Broadcasting at that time and, with production costs of 3.5 million DM, also the most expensive.

In the Middle Ages, Sachrang belonged to the “Suffragan diocese Chiemsee". That was a kind of sub-bishopric of Salzburg based on the island of Herrenwörth.

In the 16th century, Sachrang came to the Hohenaschau Lordship Court and was its own office. The hard-to-reach borderland in the rugged mountain world, between the Chiemgau and Tyrol, was then the scenario for what was then in the twentieth century as a "poor people's area", as a "stronghold" for smugglers and poachers, and thus for the glorified scenario of Heimatfilme.

In fact, today's homeland researchers rate the extremely lavish village church of Sachrang, paid for by Prince-Bishop Franz von Preysing-Hohenaschau, as a contradiction to this poverty.

The municipality of Sachrang became independent in 1827 after the end of rule at Hohenaschau Castle and became part of the municipality in the course of the Bavarian regional reform in 1978 Aschau im Chiemgau.

The beginning of the modern tourism in the region is the year 1884 with the establishment of the Aschau embellishment association. In Sachrang, the focus is on "farm holidays" in summer and on the cross-country trails and family-friendly ski lifts in winter, both for holidaymakers and day-trippers.

Movie and TV: The village and mountain idyll of Sachrang and the surrounding Priental has always been a popular film backdrop: The most elaborate and best-known production was the 1977 TV multi-part series "A Chronicle in the Mountains". Before that, however, the film "In der Sommerfrischen" and 1937 "Der Pfarrer vom Kirchfeld" had already been shot in Sachrang. After the Second World War, various Lederhosen and Seppl films with different artistic demands followed. In the 1990s, the twelve-part television series "In the shadow of the summit" was filmed here, as well as an episode of the ZDF crime series "Der Alte" and other TV series, plus numerous documentaries (list www.aschau.de).
