The Schwalm-Efze-Weg is a 26 kilometer long cycle path from Schwalmstadt-Goat grove over Frielendorf and Homberg (Efze) to Homberg (Efze)-Mountains. The cycle route is ideal for a trip to the Silbersee Frielendorf or in combination with the cycle routes running through the Schwalmtal Schwalm cycle path and Hessian long-distance cycle route R4 as a round trip.

  • Signposting: Largely complete signposting with standard-compliant signposts. In places, the signs for the cycle route fell victim to vandalism.
  • Slopes: There are steeper climbs up to the Schützenwald between Niederlimitebach and Leimsfeld, between Leimsfeld and Gebersdorf (highest point of the route) and up to Homberg (Efze).
  • Path condition: The Schwalm-Efze-Weg is paved throughout. Only the continuation of the cycle route as Efzetalweg (R 17) from Berge to Wobble runs partly on gravel roads.
  • Suitable bike: Touring bike with a 7-speed gear hub is sufficient, but more gears are better.
  • Family suitability: Except for the section in the industrial area between Sondheim and Homberg (Efze) the Schwalm-Efze-Weg is suitable for families, with the exception of a few inclines.
  • Inline suitability: As it repeatedly leads over county and state roads, the cycle route is not suitable for inline skiers.

The Schwalm is a 97.1 km long, right and main tributary of the Eder and runs from its source in the low mountain range Vogelsberg in the north of Ulrichstein above Alsfeld, Schrecksbach, Schwalmstadt, Bad Zwesten, Bark and Wobble to Felsberg-Altenburg, where it flows into the Eder. She is the longest exclusively in Hesse trending river.

The Efze is a 38.2 km long, right and largest tributary of the Schwalm and runs from the Knüllgebirge, where it rises on the Schwarzenborn military training area Wallenstein and Homberg (Efze) until shortly before Wobblewhere it flows into the Schwalm. The further discharge takes place over the Schwalm, the Eder, the Fulda and the Weser into the North Sea.

With public transport

Since the shutdown of the Knüllwaldbahn and Kanonenbahn and the closure of the two Ziegenhain train stations north and south, the next train station is in Schwalmstadt-Treysa (KBS 620), at which both local and long-distance traffic stop. For this reason, there are no longer any operational Kanonenbahn stations along the Schwalm-Efze-Weg, the next station from Berge would then be Wobble (KBS 620 and KBS 621), also stop for local and long-distance traffic.

By bicycle

In Schwalmstadt-Ziegenhain is connected to the cycle routes Schwalm cycle path, Hessian long-distance cycle route R4 and Rotkäppchenland railway cycle path, in Homberg (Efze)-Mountains connection to the Efzetalweg (to Wobble). In between the cycle paths cross Lake path (to Bark), Hessian long-distance cycle route R5 and Fulda-Efze-Weg (to Malsfeld). Varied round tours result in combination with the Schwalm cycle path (77 km) and the Efzetalweg (62 km). Running parallel to the Schwalm-Efze-Weg between Ziegenhain and Homberg (Efze) the bus routes 490 and 493. As a rule, the buses also take 1-2 bicycles with them free of charge, provided the operating situation permits.

The Schwalm-Efze-Weg runs mostly on asphalt farm roads away from or along federal, state and district roads. Between Frielendorf and Wernswig, the cycle route leads past the Silbersee with the holiday village of the same name; the silver lake itself is used as a bathing lake and fishing area with regular fish stocking. Of the 1 Bridge of the fortress road over the Schwalm, from which the two are not far south bus stopbus stopJunker Hoose Street (Lines 477 and 481) and bus stopbus stopSüdbahnhof (Lines 460, 462, 463, 464, 472, 477, 490 and 493), you cycle on the asphalt embankment of the retention basin along the glider airfield "Der Ring" (there is an information board directly on the bike path) and the Schwalm connecting canal to 2 Bathing path. At this branch of the Schwalm cycle path and the Hessian long-distance cycle route R4 direction Schrecksbach from, while the Schwalm-Efze-Weg now runs along the Grenzebach under the Wiederholdstraße and the federal road 254/454 on the Wiesenweg to Nieder Grenzebach. Not far past the Marienkirche one leaves the district of Schwalmstadt over the streets Am Grenzebach, Schützenwaldweg and Kottenbergweg again and drives on asphalt farm roads until shortly before the 3 Bundesstraße 254. Here you keep to the right and cycle on the asphalted former Bundesstraße up the Kottenberg into the Schützewald, which finally turns into an asphalted footpath and bike path. Always not far along the federal road 254, follow this over the 4 Branch to Ziegelhütte restaurant away, out of the Schützenwald and over the Gers until shortly before 5 Glue field.

The district of Frielendorf is on the former through-town via Kasseler Straße past the bus stopbus stopGlue field (Lines 473, 490 and 493) drive through and leave it past the cemetery. Then you continue cycling on the former federal road, not far from the new federal road 254, through another small wooded area, in which you can also see the former railway line of the 6 Cross the Kanonenbahn and take an asphalt footpath and bike path to a parking lot on the main road, on which there is a snack from the Schäfer butcher's shop (opposite side of the street). A little later you cycle on the Hainstraße past an old cart with the inscription "Glück Auf" into Gebersdorf; in the center of the village directly on the Schwalm-Efze-Weg is the bus stopbus stopGebersdorf (Lines 418, 428, 490 and 493). Gebersdorf also passed quickly, so that after leaving the village, one enters the Hainstraße (through the town) 7 District road 128 branches off and this follows slightly winding and uphill to Spieskappel. Past the bus stopbus stopSpieskappel (Lines 418, 490 and 493) keep to the left in the village and reach the Spieskappeler Straße via the wide cycle path or sidewalk Frielendorf. Past the bus stopbus stopGym (Lines 418, 428, 490 and 493) turn to the next larger one 8 Crossing to the right into the main street and thus drives into the center of Frielendorf at the latest at the junction of the lake path (R 15) Bark or at the bus stopbus stopcenter (Lines 418, 490 and 493) is reached.

In Frielendorf you can reach Homberger Straße via the main street and follow it in a northerly direction to bus stopbus stopSilbersee junction (Lines 418, 490 and 493), behind which you branch off into the street Zum Silbersee and follow it out of Frielendorf. After driving under the former railway line of the Kanonenbahn, you cycle past the bus stopbus stopSilver lake (Line 493) and the former stop at Frielendorf Silbersee (partly overgrown) 9 North shore of the Silbersee. Further information on the leisure activities around the Silbersee can be found at www.silbersee-erlebniswelt.de. You cycle on asphalt farm roads along the edge of the forest past the Silbersee mobile home park and soon reach Kreisstraße 44, into which you turn left and which you follow over an old level crossing of the Kanonenbahn. Directly behind this, the Schwalm-Efze-Weg branches off into another asphalt farm road, which initially runs in a northerly direction, but soon afterwards in an easterly direction over the Niederbach to Wernswig. On the outskirts you pass the former railway line of the Kanonenbahn one more time and turn behind it bus stopbus stopBranch station (Lines 427 and 493) into the street Above the Bahn, on which you go to the previous stop and today's 10 Local history museum in Wernswig station. The Schwalm-Efze-Weg remains on the outskirts, so that you finally leave the Vossäcker Wernswig on the road and cycle on a direct (paved) path over to Sondheim. In the village you drive around the evangelical one 11 Church around, cross the Rinnebach and cycle over the street "Am Berg" up to the Kanonenbahn, which you cross. Then follow an asphalt farm road up to the level of the Schlagmühle, leave it on the left and drive slightly uphill in a northerly direction to the 12 Edge of the Homberger Industrial area (Rudolf-Diesel-Straße).

This is followed by the busiest and most problematic section of the entire Schwalm-Efze-Weg trail for families. On wide streets, some of which have no sidewalks, the cycle route runs along Ludwig-Erhard-Straße past the bus stopbus stopindustrial area (Lines 490 and 493) and down the Robert-Bosch-Straße into the Efzetal. From there it goes uphill again on Ziegenhainer Straße, in between it crosses 13 Efzetalweg, past the bus stopbus stopSchmückebergsweg (Lines 409, 412, 427. 490 and 493) and after Homberg (Efze) into it. Further uphill, you pass a roundabout and finally reach the Ziegenhainer Straße past the Federal President Theodor Heuss School 14 Old town, accessible via the Hessian long-distance cycle route R5. Shortly afterwards, the busiest section of the Schwalm-Efze-Weg has been mastered when it branches off from Kasseler Straße into Mardorfer Weg. You then leave via this and the Sudetenweg Homberg (Efze), crosses the northern bypass (state road 3224) and drives downhill on asphalt farm roads past a prominent single tree with a rest area 15 Mardorf. Towards the exit of the town keep to the right and take the street Am Birkenhof to reach federal highway 254, which you carefully cross. Along the Klingelbach it is then not far to Berge, where the Schwalm-Efze-Weg comes to the after 26 kilometers 16 Efzebrücke ends. From the Efzebrücke it is only a few meters to the bus stopbus stopcenter (Line 450).

The runs from Berge Efzetalweg (R 17) mostly on gravel farm roads over Hebel and Unshausen, where the Schwalm cycle path branches off, after Wobble. The length of the route to the train station Wobble (KBS 620 / KBS 621) is simply about 6.5 km.
