Sergiev Posad (Russian: Сергиев Посад) is a city in Central Russia, it is one of the major tourist centers in the vicinity of the capital Moscow and is one of the Golden ring.

The city emerged from several villages that merged in the 18th century. It has changed its name several times in the last century. After the establishment of the Soviet Union it was called briefly Sergiev, from 1930 they were known under the name Sagorsk (Загорск). It has had its old name again since 1991 Sergiev Posad.

The Trinity Sergius Monastery

The monastery Troize Sergieve Lavra (Тро́ице-Се́ргиева Ла́вра) is a mighty, fortress-like complex, surrounded by a total of 1300 m long wall and several defense towers. Since 1946 the monastery has been the headquarters of the Orthodox Church. Part of the extensive facility is therefore not open to the public. Essential buildings are

  • 1  Trinity Cathedral. The original of its magnificent iconostasis is in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, and the copy on display is also worth seeing.
  • Bell tower. The tower with a height of 88 m towers over the facility.
