Suzdal (Russian: Су́здаль) is a city in Central Russia.

background

Suzdal is first mentioned in writing in 1024, the place already had city rights at that time. It was the capital of a principality several times and one of the religious centers of Russia until the 20th century. In the Soviet Union, the churches lost their importance and the monasteries were transformed into museums. The city has become a living museum, its streets have been used as film sets. The sights are among the most important of the Golden ring, and some buildings are part of the World Heritage of UNESCO.

Tourist Attractions

Transfiguration Church in the Museum of Timber Architecture

Priorities should be set when visiting Suzdal. You will probably not be able to see all the sights in one day.

The Kremlin

The complex dates from the 11th and 12th centuries, originally it was surrounded by earth walls and wooden palisades. The earth walls are preserved, inside the Kremlin are the most important buildings:

  • 1  Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin. With its five blue domes, the south and west gates of the cathedral are fire-gilded.
  • 2  Bell tower
  • 3  The episcopal palace

In the rooms of the Kremlin there are exhibitions on history, handicrafts and monastic life.

Museum of Timber Architecture

  • Open-air museum for wood construction. On the other side of the Kamenka River is an open-air museum for wooden architecture and everyday rural life. Some wooden churches that were brought here are worth seeing, as are some windmills, farms, barns and wells.

Suzdal Monasteries

  • Maria-Schutz nunnery
  • Cloister deposition monastery

various

There are quite a number of old buildings worth seeing near the Kremlin:

  • Suburban house
  • Kosmas and Damian Church
  • Church of the Resurrection of Christ

activities

It is especially nice to go for walks in early summer or in winter when there is a lot of snow. The area is very idyllic.

There are several potteries in Suzdal where you can do your own thing. There you can also buy cheap local black ceramics as well as more modern ceramics.

shop

In the above mentioned pottery ceramics, as well as in the Vasiliev Monastery a nice shop with handcrafted dolls, bags, etc. In addition, pictures and watercolors, as well as the usual souvenirs.

kitchen

There are several nice restaurants around the main square, none of which are particularly cheap or expensive. In summer there are also smaller "beer gardens" right at the Kremlin, something to rest, drink and eat ice cream and, last but not least, to watch people. Otherwise there are several small supermarkets with groceries along the two main streets.

nightlife

accommodation

There is - a pension that is very "German", but also cozy and of the appropriate standard, centrally located and even with a small terrace on the 1st floor and a view of the church towers. - The tourist complex with many inexpensive rooms and groups; partly a bit worn, but ok. Better to eat somewhere else. - New hotels with some utopian prices, some very nice. - Simple accommodations / huts on the monastery grounds of ... Maria Schutz und Intercession Monastery ... special, but not cheap!

Practical advice

It is very easy to get around in Suzdal. It's a very small, village-like place, very clearly laid out and everything is within walking distance. However, hardly anyone speaks anything other than Russian.
