Vladimir (Russian: Влади́мир), the capital of the governorate of the same name, is located on the right bank of the Klyazma River and about 180 km northeast of Moscow and belongs to the famous "Golden Ring" with a unique ensemble of churches, cathedrals and monasteries from the 11th to 13th centuries. Many of these architectural monuments are under the protection of the world cultural heritage UNESCO.

background

Geographical

Vladimir lies on the Klyazma River, which forms the southern natural border of the city. To the north, the city is bounded by an old trade route. In the area of the city one can still find those deep gorges with steep slopes that formed an important part of the city's fortifications centuries ago.

The map of Vladimir is pretty simple. The main road runs from west to east. When crossing the city, it changes its name several times: Moskowskoje Chaussee (entrance from the M7 expressway) - Lenin Prospect - Studjonaja Gora - Dworjanskaja - Bolshaya (Great) Moskovskaya - Bolshaya Nischegorodskaya - Dobrosjelskaya (entrance from the direction of Nizhny Novgorod). From this "main axis" some other large streets go off, such as Gorkijstraße, Muromstraße, Suzdaler Chaussee etc.

Most of the sights, hotels and restaurants are in the historical part of the city, such as Bolshaya Moskovskaya (Great Moscow Street) and the branching side streets.

history

Dormition Cathedral

Vladimir was founded in 990 by the Kiev Grand Duke Vladimir Svyatoslavich, who was called "Vladimir Red Sun" by the Russian people. At the beginning of the 10th century the place was a small town compared to Suzdal and Rostov, which at that time were already one of the most important political centers in the territory of the Old Rus, i.e. the pre-tsarist Russian Empire.

Vladimir's heyday began in 1155 when Grand Duke Andrei Bogolyubsky moved his residence from Kiev to Vladimir. In 1169 he conquered Kiev and declared himself Grand Duke of Vladimir. Since then the city has been the center of the Grand Duchy of Vladimir-Suzdal and at the same time the whole of Ancient Russia. From 1155 to 1174 numerous churches, monasteries and cathedrals were built from white shell limestone in Vladimir. Today they are among the masterpieces of old Russian architecture. The heyday ended in 1238 with the conquest of the city by the Tatars. Most of the churches and cathedrals were looted and burned down. But even during the Mongolian rule, Vladimir remained a major religious and cultural center of north-eastern Russia for a long time. The Metropolitan had his seat here until 1326. The Dormition Cathedral was the main church of the Ancient Rus, and the Moscow Grand Dukes were crowned here for a long time.

In the 14th century, Vladimir lost his status as the capital, and Moscow began to play a more important role as the political center of Russia from then on. The continuity of both cities was preserved: So the icon of the Mother of God of Vladimir (she is the patroness of the Russian country) was brought to Moscow; later the Assumption Cathedral was built in the Moscow Kremlin on the model of the Vladimir Church.

From the 15th century, Vladimir became a small provincial town again. It has been the capital of the governorate of the same name since 1778.

Today Vladimir is a large historical and cultural center with almost 350,000 inhabitants and is of great interest to tourists as the former capital of Ancient Rus.

Tourist Attractions

You should definitely visit three monuments of ancient Russian architecture from the 12th and 13th centuries in Vladimir. They are under the protection of UNESCO and are among the country's oldest buildings made of white shell limestone:

Golden Gate

  • 3  Golden Gate. Goldenes Tor in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaGoldenes Tor im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsGoldenes Tor (Q775020) in der Datenbank Wikidata.Unesco World Heritage Sites in Europe
on Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street. One of five stone gates of old Vladimir, built between 1158 and 1164 during the reign of Grand Duke Andrei Bogolyubsky. On both sides of the Golden Gate there was a high earth wall with mighty wooden fortifications on top. The Golden Gate is a unique and well-preserved monument of the old Russian military architecture from the time before the Mongol storm. Not even Khan Batyj could destroy the gate in 1238. In the 19th century, the earth walls were largely removed, and four round fortifications were built as additional fortifications for the gate. You can get an impression of all this on a large panorama picture in the Museum of Military History in the interior of the Golden Gate. To the right of the gate, in Koslow-Wall-Straße, a small fragment of the old earth wall can still be seen today.
Demetrius Cathedral

Near the Golden Gate

  • Catholic Church, Gogolstrasse 12. The neo-Gothic style building, which is rather unusual for Vladimir, was built in 1891 for soldiers of a Polish-Lithuanian regiment. The church and rectory belong to the Rosary Congregation. In addition to the church services, concerts are also held here regularly.
  • 4 Archangel Mikhail Church, Studjonaja Gora 1. It was built in 1893 in the neo-Byzantine style. Russian Orthodox services are held here.
  • Trinity Church, Dvoryanskaya Street 2. The red brick Old Believers' building was built in the neo-Russian style between 1913 and 1916. Today one of the glass exhibitions of the Vladimir Suzdal Museum can be seen here.
  • Water tower, Koslow-Wall-Strasse. One of the landmarks of Vladimir. It was built in red brick in 1868 as part of the city's first aqueduct, then rebuilt in 1912. Today you can visit the exhibition "Old Vladimir" here.
  • Patriarch's Garden. It is very close to the water tower. Today it is believed that Grand Duke Andrei Bogolyubsky laid out this garden. Here you can see rare plants, bushes and trees in front of the great panorama of the Cathedral of the Assumption.

Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street

The Cathedral Square divides this street into two almost identical and yet very different parts. The street from the Golden Gate to the Cathedral Square crosses the old town. Here are many secular buildings from the 18th to 20th centuries:

  • St. George, Georgievskaya Street 6. Originally, this church was one of the oldest in Vladimir (1157), but at the end of the 18th century it went up in flames and a new baroque-style church was built in its place. It is generally assumed that only the white roof-shaped bell tower of the former church has been preserved, because it stands out from the yellow church building in the baroque style. In the interior you can see frescoes from the first half of the 19th century.
  • Nativity of Christ monastery, 68 Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street. The men's monastery was founded in 1191 and played an important role in the history of the Orthodox Church for centuries. The Vladimir Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky was buried here in 1236. Mighty walls (18th century), residential buildings with monk cells, rooms for archpriests (17th century) and the Church of the Nativity of Christ (17th century) have been preserved to this day. The Archbishop of Vladimir has his seat here.
  • "Ampir" movie theater, Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street 13. Originally this building was built in Art Nouveau style, but then sold and redesigned in Empire style by the new house owner. Today you can still see a stone image depicting ancient Romans on its front facade. Much can still be seen of Art Nouveau. Before the October Revolution, the first Vladimir movie theater was located here.
  • Trade arcades ("Torgowye Rjady"), 19 Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street. They were built at the end of the 18th century. Originally laid out as a long one-story building with numerous small shops, it has been constantly rebuilt and expanded. In the northern part there is now a large shopping center.
  • Church of the Assumption of Mary in the Princesses' Monastery, Knjagininskaya Street. The princess monastery was founded at the end of the 12th century by the wife of the Vladimir Grand Duke Vsevolod Bolshoye Gnesdo (Big Nest was his nickname because he had a lot of children) and is now one of the oldest monasteries in the Vladimir governorate. The Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary is worth seeing, which was built between 1200 and 1202 in the same architectural style as the most important cathedrals of Vladimir. Later the church was rebuilt several times in the style of Moscow architecture from the beginning of the 16th century. In the interior you can see frescoes by Moscow icon painters from the 17th century.
  • Martyr Nikita Church, Knjagininskaya Street 8. Nikitskaya Church. The church was built in the years 1762-1765 in baroque style. It is one of the most colorful buildings in the city. Today its interior houses a restoration workshop.
  • Old pharmacy, Georgievskaya Street 3. A small but beautiful building from the 18th century, originally a wing of the governorate house.
  • Church of the Savior Nikolaj

Sobornaya Square (Cathedral Square)

  • Monument in honor of the 850th anniversary of the founding of Vladimir. Appointed in Soviet times. Striking monument in the style of socialist realism. It was inaugurated in 1969.
  • Andrei Rublev monument
  • Vladimir Red Sun Monument
  • Lenin monument. 1925.
  • Alexander Nevsky Monument
  • City park with fountain. 1860.
  • Nobility Assembly Building, 33 Bolshaya Moskovskaya Street. Erected at the end of the 18th century and rebuilt in Empire style in 1826. In the 19th century it was the center of cultural life in Vladimir.
