Palekh (Russian: Палех) is a small town in Central Russia, known for its lacquer paintings.
background
Wood carvers and icon painters had been active in the small town of Palech since the 16th century. Caskets have been decorated with lacquer paintings here since the Middle Ages. The icon painters from Palech were also famous for their work with tempera paints and gold. After the October Revolution, religious icon painting lost its importance under communist rule. Since the end of the Soviet Union, attempts have been made to revive the old traditions.
