Strasbourg, French: Strasbourg, Alsatian: Strossburi, is more than 2000 years old and is now the largest city in the Alsace and seventh largest city Of France, with the suburbs there are even 430,000. Strasbourg is the capital of the department Bas-Rhin, the Alsace region and seat of various European institutions, including the Council of Europe, the European Parliament, the European Court of Human Rights, the European Ombudsman and the Eurocorps. Strasbourg is mainly French-speaking, due to its history and its proximity to the border, some Strasbourgers also speak German or the Alsatian dialect.
background
In the year 12 BC The Romans built a fortified castle in the swampy area on the Ill near the Rhine and named it Argentoratum to protect the border of the Roman Empire from the barbarian invasions. After the city was destroyed in the 5th century, it was rebuilt from its ruins under the name Strateburg. The city grew in several spurts. It belonged to the crown of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation and freed itself from the rule of the bishop in 1262. It received political rights from the emperor that went far beyond those of other cities and became an imperial city. The dealer market was founded in 1336, the Rhine bridge was built in 1388 as the last bridge over the river before the sea. Strasbourg became one of the most important European centers of the art of printing after Gutenberg had lived and worked here for ten years. After the Thirty Years War, Strasbourg founded a university in 1621.
Through the Peace of Westphalia, the French king annexed Alsace. He reintroduced Catholicism, but at the same time guaranteed freedom of religion. Since then, Strasbourg has changed national "affiliations" between France and Germany several times. In this respect, it is hardly surprising that the city is strongly influenced by both cultures.

kitchen
In the city you can find restaurants of all categories and different cuisines: In addition to traditional Alsatian and classic French restaurants, there are Chinese, Arabic, African and Indian restaurants, some of which are of a high standard.
The "Winstubs", wine bars with Alsatian cuisine of varying quality, are very popular with tourists, but also with Strasbourg residents themselves. Tourist restaurants can be found especially in the Petit France area and in the area around the cathedral.
The original Strasbourg cuisine is quite hearty: sausage salad, press head, meat schnaka (meatballs), choucroute (sauerkraut), etc. The French classics such as foie gras and coq au vin (in this case Riesling) join in.
The Strasbourg "fast food" is the Flammekuche, a thin dough, traditionally "topped" with sour cream, bacon and onions.
Strasbourg is - although located in the Alsace wine country - a city of beer drinkers (e.g. Kronenbourg). In the winstubs in particular, however, some excellent regional wines are offered (Riesling, Pinot, Gewürztraminer).

security
In Strasbourg, as in some other European cities, there is the problem of youth unemployment. In order to earn money, members of marginalized groups in particular use creative, albeit illegal, means. For example, individual tourists are often approached by hawkers and forced to buy some souvenirs, and pickpocketing is also an everyday crime. However, tourist groups can move around the city quite safely.
