Middle Franconia - historical land in the south Germany, today a district (German Bezirk) and a regency in the federal state Bavaria. The capital of Central Franconia is Ansbach. Other major cities are Nuremberg, Fürth, Erlangen and Schwabach. Rivers flow through Middle Franconia Pegnitz, Rednitz and Regnitz.

History
The district was formed mainly from two historical regions: the Free City of the Reich of Nuremberg and the Burggrave of Nuremberg, later transformed into the Margrave of Ansbach. In addition, the bishopric of Bamberg and the Bavarian Electorate had their estates here. The first two regions converted to Lutheranism during the Reformation, the last two remained Catholic. This division is still visible today.
