holiday

On April 18, the governorate's national day, the Battle of Benī ʿAdī on April 18, 1799. In the village, about nine kilometers southwest of Manfalūṭ Located on the edge of the desert, around 3,000 villagers, partly mounted, fought against infantry and cavalry troops of the French occupying forces under General under the leadership of Sheikh Ḥasan el-Chaṭīb, who were supported by 450 Egyptian Arabs and 300 Mamluks Louis Nicolas Davout (Davoust, 1770-1823). In preparation for the battle, the houses had been fortified so that they could fight the French troops. However, the village was completely destroyed by a major fire and could therefore be captured and looted by the French troops. Around 2,000 insurgents fell in the battle on the Egyptian side, while only minor losses were reported on the French side.[1]
