Brazil (Portuguese:Brazil) is by far the largest country in South America. It occupies about half of the continent's total land area. In addition, almost half of all South American populations live in Brazil; more than 180 million people. Brazil has a long coastline on the Atlantic Ocean and has land borders with all other South American countries except Ecuador and Chili.

Regions

Brazil is the fifth largest country on Earth. It is divided into five regions, which follow the national borders, but also have natural, economic and cultural borders.

It has the highest standard of living in the country. There are only two major cities (curitiba and Porto Alegre) and some medium-sized cities with very low crime rates. German, Italian, Polish and Ukrainian immigrants colonized the region in the mid-19th century. It is the only region in Brazil where it snows every year, mainly in the central mountain region of the state of Santa Catarina.

This is possible upon arrival in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo or one of the other international airports in Brazil, with a local agent, but also from the Netherlands. Olaf Travel [1] is highly recommended for adventurous travelers who want to arrange as little as possible themselves and still want to discover beautiful places on their own.

money matters

The first currency used in Brazil was the guilder from 1624, during the occupation of Brazil by the Netherlands. The currency now is the Brazilian Real, abbreviated to BRL, the plural is reais. 100 Centavos is 1 real. The coins: 1, 10, 25, 50 centavos and 1 real. Paper money: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 real.

The rate of the Real is (May 2019)1 EUR = 4.40 BRL1 BRL = 0.23 EUR

Until 1999, the US dollar and the Brazilian Real were equal, but due to the global financial crisis, the value of the Real has fallen sharply. At the moment (2019) 1 US$ is about 3.94 BRL.

Food

In Brazil they eat a lot of rice, beans, sauces, meat, fish and salads. They eat differently in each region, because on the coast people eat more fish and shrimp. In the south they eat more meat grills. In Brazil the food is very cheap and very hygienic. In Brazil, a lot of cooking is done with wood ovens, which gives the food a special taste.

In Brazil, a lot of fruit juices are drunk and a lot of fruit is eaten. The type of fruit that is eaten the most is the fruit that you can grow there, and there are about 20 of them. Caipirinha is also really Brazilian. Caipirinha is a cocktail spirit that consists of rum, limes, sugar and ice. Tap water is not drinkable in Brazil, so if you want to drink water there you have to buy spring water. What they also drink a lot in Brazil chimarrão or extent. This is a type of tea made from experience-mate. In a special cup called cuia, this herb is mixed with water and passed through a thick iron straw called bomba drunk.

Safety

There is a certain security risk for the entire country

There are stories that Brazil is a very dangerous country. These stories originate from tourists who have been robbed. Such a robbery can take place by force. These robberies take place in the major cities. In the smaller towns, more in the province, everything is very calm, quiet and peaceful. The people are very friendly and open.

Here are some tips to make sure you don't get mugged:

  • Don't look too much like a tourist.
The clothing in Brazil consists of a T-shirt, shorts and slippers. That is more than enough to go to the beach. Don't take too much money with you; food is generally cheap compared to the Benelux. Leave jewelry at home; these only give white streaks after sunbathing. Do not take striking photos; that draws attention. Enjoy the beauty and hold the thoughts.
  • Don't stand out. Many Europeans are a head taller than Brazilians and have fair skin, blond hair and blue eyes; that is enough already. Also adhere to the above dress code.
  • Do not go to places where a normal person knows danger lurks. Dark alleys and dangerous suburbs are no places for a tourist. Go to the beach, eat at a restaurant, take the bus, it's all safe.

The yellow taxis in Rio are known for ripping off tourists and charging at least double the normal fare.
