District communities of South Tyrol

The district community Überetsch-Unterland includes that Überetsch(ItS | Oltradige) and the South Tyrolean lowlands(Italian: Bassa Atesina)that too Bolzano lowlands is called. The area includes the Adige Valley from Bolzano downstream to the Salurner Hermitage. It is internationally known as a wine-growing region; other important branches of business are fruit growing and tourism.

Regions

The Unterland was shaped by the Ice Age glaciers and the streams leading from the Mendel Mountains to the west and the foothills of the Fleimstaler The Alps flowed into the Adige Valley in the east and piled debris cones in the Adige Valley, on which the villages of the lowlands settled. Up until the end of the 19th century, large parts of the lowlands were therefore regularly flooded and at times of the snowmelt. Roads in the valley floor of the Etsch only became possible through the Adige regulation at the time of Empress Maria Theresa. This is an exception Überetsch, which is between the ridge of the Mitterbergs and the Mendel Mountains.

Traditionally, the three South Tyrolean mountain communities on the east side of the Adige Valley are also part of the Unterland, even if they are at the low mountain range on the edge of the Fiemme Valley lie.

background

Before the First World War, the Unterland belonged to the Bozen district and thus to Austria. In 1920 South Tyrol was annexed by Italy, the place names were named after Prontuary of Ettore Tolomei Italianized. The Unterland was separated from South Tyrol and the province Trentino slammed. Through the Castelfeder protest rally in 1946 and the autonomy movement of South Tyrol, the lowlands came back to the province of Bolzano in 1948.

To the one founded in 1955 District community Überetsch-Unterland(Oltradige-Bassa Atesina) with administrative headquarters in Neumarkt belong to the municipalities of the lowlands, plus the two municipalities of Überetsch as Andrian and Terlan.

language

In the communities along the Adige there had been a proportion of people with Italian as their mother tongue for centuries. Due to the economic development in the greater Bolzano area in particular, their share has increased significantly in the last few decades, and South Tyrolean German is still the predominant language in rural communities, especially in the mountain regions.
