Waldkirchen is a small town near the Bavarian Forest National Park in the tri-border region Bavaria - Czech Republic - Austria. Waldkirchen is known nationwide for the Garhammer fashion house, which even attracts customers from Munich. The city name could go back to a document around 1203 in which a pastor mentioned a "church in the forest", which suggests that it was a forest church.

Due to the favorable location on the Salzweg to Bohemia (Goldener Steig) the place got the market rights in 1285 and later the sole right of deposit for salt as a stage between Passau and South bohemia. The weekly markets that arose as a result brought prosperity to today's city, which is why they were blackmailed into pillage in 1458 by the Kaplirz de Sulewicz, an old Bohemian noble family. As a result, Bishop Ulrich von Nussdorf had a curtain wall built with ten towers and two gateways in the 1460s. This is still partially preserved today. Waldkirchen was repeatedly ravaged by market fires; the last fire occurred after shelling by American troops in the last days of World War II on April 26, 1945, killing eight people, destroying 48 houses and the church and leaving 120 families homeless. Finally, Waldkirchen was raised from the market to a town in 1972 and is now a state-approved health resort and relaxation area in front Bavarian Forest. In the last century, the number of districts grew through extensive incorporations from 1939 with 1,926 inhabitants to around 8,800 inhabitants in 1980. In 2009, with the reactivation of the Ilz Valley Railway again a rail connection.
