Achim is a city in the district Verden in Lower Saxony. It's up to the Mittelweser southeast of Bremen.

Today's Achim was first used in 1091 as Acheim or Arahem mentioned in a document. Finds, however, indicate that Stone Age groups of hunters and gatherers were camping at this point. Achim suffered great damage in the Thirty Years' War, only two houses and the stone church survived the village fire. The "Bremen key" in the coat of arms is intended to remind that Achim belonged to the ore monastery of Bremen until 1648. The Achimers experienced the beginning of industrialization in 1847 with the construction of the Bremen - Wunstorf (Hanover) railway line. After 1833, Achim became a stronghold of cigar manufacturing and remained so until the beginning of the 20th century. Today the cigar maker monument in the pedestrian zone in front of the town hall and the sculpture “The Reader” in front of the district court remind of this. In 1847 Achim got a train station. The railway also brought the first tourists to Achim, Baden and Uphusen. There were larger restaurants in all places. In the time of National Socialism, Achim was their regional center. The synagogue and the Jewish cemetery were destroyed, fellow Jews were expelled and murdered, and there were forced labor camps in Uphusen and Uesen. In 1945, at the end of the Second World War, the Weser Bridge in Uesen, inaugurated in 1928, was blown up. This important traffic connection was restored in 1951 when the bridge was rebuilt. In 1949 Achim received city rights.
Because of its location on the Weser near Bremen, Achim is also frequent Achim near Bremen called. The city of Achim consists of the localities of Bollen and Embsen and the districts of Achim, Baden, Badenermoor, Bierden, Borstel, Uesen and Uphusen. Today Achim is the center in the northern part of the Verden district. Several international companies are based here. - 1 St. Lawrence Church (Parish church), Pfarrstrasse, 28832 Achim. Tel.: 49 (0)4202 2248 (Church office), Fax: 49 (0)4202 638244, Email: [email protected]. The church, consecrated to St. Lawrence of Rome, is the oldest building in the city and is used by the Evangelical Lutheran St. Laurentius parish of Achim. It was probably built on a former pagan cult site and was first mentioned in a document in 1257. In the Mandelsloh and Clüver Chapel there are old grave monuments and two marble sarcophagi belonging to an old noble family from Achim. The oldest piece in the church is the late Romanesque baptismal font with a modern bronze lid depicting the story of creation. The baroque pulpit with pictures of the evangelists dates from 1637. In 2012, as part of an interior renovation, a baroque painting from the 17th century was discovered. - 4 Achimer windmill, Mühlenstrasse, 28832 Achim. The current Achimer windmill was built in 1761 as a gallery Dutch windmill. A post mill was already located on the scenic Geestrücke in 1651. It is 29 m high, two-story and has a thatched tower. Each of the four wings is eleven meters long. In order to be able to optimally adapt the grinding operation to the wind conditions, it was retrofitted with a wind rose in 1912. It is considered to be Achim's landmark. In a scenic location on the Geestrücken, the mill offers a wonderful unobstructed view of the Wesermarsch. Since 1969 the mill has been open to the public for visits as part of mill tours under the care of the "Association for the Preservation of the Achimer Windmühle e.V." - The 5 District Court is still located at Obernstrasse 40 in a building that was completed in 1864. The entrance to the district court is adorned by a beautiful old wooden door with simple ornaments. The prison behind the district court was used as a penal system until 2012.
- The 6 Old City Hall at Obernstrasse 75 is now the seat of another part of the local court. The beautiful villa was built in 1829 and was the Achim town hall from 1930 to 1993.
- 7 Gate house, Obernstrasse 43, 28832 Achim (at the market square). The gate house built in 1789 for the porter of the office building was also a prison. The porter was also the prison guard. Prisoners were guarded here and reportedly even tortured. In 1835 another floor was added. This served as a courtroom until 1864. Today there is a restaurant in the building.
- The 8 Clüverhaus is a typical two-column half-timbered farmhouse in Lower Saxony. As the beam above the "Grootdöör" suggests, it was built in 1824. The former farm is one of the 14 building yards (large farms), most of which were managed until the 20th century. Historically, these building yards are likely to be the oldest settlement areas in the area. The farm was owned by the Clüver family for several centuries. Civil weddings are possible in the cozy fireplace room. A café is located where humans and animals once lived under one roof.
- The 9 Facade of Rieke's honey cake factory in Obernstrasse 59 is the only preserved one of the "Bakery and Confectionery P. Heinrich Rieke" founded in 1862, which later became the "Riekes honey cake factory". Until its closure in 1978, the company enjoyed a high level of awareness beyond the Achim city limits. Some of the town musicians can be seen in the lovingly preserved "honey cake gable".
- The 10 House Hünenburg Today it houses the modern Hünenburg conference center. The building is a lovingly restored stately Art Nouveau villa from the beginning of the 20th century in the middle of a historical ring wall. This ring wall was built in the 11th century and has largely been preserved to this day. According to legend, around 1400 the notorious pirate Klaus Störtebeker used the Hünenburg as cover for his ships. There is even a rumor that Störtebeker was (Achim-) Badener. The "Haus Hünenburg" is used today for scientific, cultural and economic purposes. Civil weddings are also possible here.
- The 11 Kreissparkasse Achim still has its headquarters in the 1891 for the Spar- und Leihkasse of the district of Achim built functional administration building. The Art Nouveau building was originally a brick building and was later plastered. The slightly protruding extension dates from 1912 and shows stylistic elements of neo-classicism.
- 12 Lindemann Castle In 1873 it was a large building in the neo-Gothic style, which was unusual for Achim's village conditions. The house built for the District Court Councilor Lindemann was therefore popularly called "Castle". After a fire around 1900 and the chaos of war, it was restored and is now used by the district music school.
- The 13 Storage Scherf was rebuilt in 1987 after the previous building could no longer be renovated due to severe deterioration. For many years, fertilizer, seeds and fuel were stored in the old granary. In front of the granary is the old market square, formerly a traditional cattle market and Krammarkt with carousels and shooting galleries. - The 15 Jewish cemetery is a protected cultural monument and can be visited by appointment (contact phone: 49 (0) 4202 522082). There are 56 tombstones for Jews from Achim and the surrounding area, who died between 1867 and 1935, in the 1,000 square meter cemetery on the “An der Eisenbahn” street. During this period, at least 61 members of the Achim synagogue community were buried there. In the course of the Reichspogromnacht in 1938, the Jewish cemetery in Achim was also heavily devastated.
