Regions
The north of the province lies in the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains. To the south of it the Ebro flows through it. In the southeast, the Duero rises in the Sierra de la Demanda, which belongs to the Iberian Mountains.
Condado de Treviño is a municipality in the province that, together with the municipality of La Puebla de Arganzón, forms an enclave within the Basque province of Álava.

- Lerma, a small town above the Rio Arlanza, worth seeing: the ducal palace and several former monastery buildings as well as an old stone bridge over the Arlanza

- Sierra de Atapuerca. The small mountain range lies east of the capital, Burgos. There is one of the most important sites of human fossils, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.
