- The nature park Parque Natural de la Sierra de María-Los Vélez with a large population of Mediterranean holm oak forests and the rare Moorish tortoise.
- The nature park Parque Natural Cabo de Gata-Níjar is located in the core area of the stony semi-desert of the same name. It is considered the only desert in Europe (Article in Wikipedia). A few years ago, the villages in the nature park were not yet developed for tourism, but a number of holiday resorts have now been built. In addition to the two larger towns Carboneras and San Jose there are some smaller ones. The nature park is ideal for hiking and mountain biking. Secluded, sometimes picturesque beaches can also be discovered on foot. At the village El Cabo De Gata there are salt pans for salt production. Flamingos have settled in these and can be observed from certain signposted vantage points (some of which are located directly on the road). There are binoculars with coin-operated machines at the vantage points; if the flamingos are a little further away, it is definitely worth looking through the binoculars. At the top of the cape there is a lighthouse, which can be reached via a somewhat narrow, but paved road and offers a lookout point.
background
In the area of Nijar there are countless ones in a valley basin Greenhouses made of plastic sheeting, in which mainly tomatoes are planted. It can be assumed that a large part of the European supermarket goods for tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers come from this area. Allegedly, these greenhouses are even visible from space. The whole thing seems paradoxical since the environment is desert-like. There are guided tours through the greenhouses.
