General

The province lies in the plateau La Mancha between Montes de Toledo in the north and the Sierra Morena in the south. It has an area of 19,813 km² and 506,864 inhabitants (2006). Only one in eight lives in the provincial capital Ciudad Real. The others live in the 100 municipios (Villages). One of the largest wine-growing areas with 30,000 hectares Valdepeñas is in the province. The vineyards are located on southern slopes at an altitude of 700 m. Mountain ranges protect them from winds. The deep chalk soils store the water in the rather arid La Mancha. There are 35 wineries that produce 500,000 hectoliters of DO Valdepeñas wine. Common grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon (red wine), Tempranillo, Garnacha and Airen and Macabeo (white wine).
