background
The Estado de México, briefly too Edomex called, is roughly the center of the earlier Aztec empire. Originally Provincia do Mexico, later Intendancia, this territory had 120,000 km², after the spin-off of the federal district, the distrito federal and the states Guerrero, Hidalgo and Morelos in the 19th century and further assignments of territory to the federal district, around 21,500 km² remained. Over 14 million people live in this relatively narrow area; the population density is around 650 inhabitants / km², almost three times as high as in Germany (approx. 230 inh / km²). This fact alone makes it understandable that there is enormous social tension here, that air pollution is a problem. Further problems arise from the fact that the plateau lies in the area of active volcanoes with regular earthquake activity.
Near the federal district is the Estado de México strongly industrialized, with increasing distance, agriculture also increases in importance. A few areas like Teotihuacan are interesting for tourists.
