background

The city has around 260,000 inhabitants. It is located in a main valley of the Sierra Madre del Sur at about 1500 m altitude on the Panamericana. The first human settlements were built by the Zapotec and Mixtec peoples. The nearby sites Monte Albán and Mitla date from this period, and Monte Albán is considered the forerunner of today's Oaxaca. The Aztecs arrived around 1440, and in 1521 the Spaniards, led by Francisco de Orozco, followed them in search of gold.

In the 16th century the Spaniards laid out a colonial city in today's grid pattern, but they only got really rich in the 19th century through a louse: the Cochineal scale insect lives on some Opuntia species. This tiny animal produces one Cochineal- dye that Carmine, which at that time (and still today) is considered a symbol of power by church dignitaries. Later development didn't particularly affect it, so today it's a charming old-time city center.

During the Spanish colonial period the city was called Antequera, but after Mexico gained independence it was changed to Oaxaca. Perhaps the most famous Mexican president, Benito Juárez (after whom the Mexico City airport is named), was born in the state and began his political career in the city. After his death in 1872, his family name was added to the city's official name, which has since been Oaxaca de Juárez.
