Location of the province of Avila in Spain

The province Avila lies in the autonomous region Castile and Leon. It borders the provinces Toledo, Cáceres, Salamanca, Valladolid and Segovia as well as to the metropolitan area Madrid.

The northern part of the province is an agricultural plateau, intersected by the valleys of the rivers Tormes, Trabancos and Adaja on their way to Douro. In the south lies the granite massif of the Sierra de Gredos, it belongs to the Castilian Divide Mountains. The region around the 2592 m high Pico Almanzor has high mountain character. The rivers flow in the far south Alberche and Tiétar to the Tagus river, Its valleys, sheltered by the Sierra de Gredos, have a relatively mild climate in which palm trees and oranges also thrive.

The province has around 170,000 inhabitants. About one in three lives in the capital Ávila, the rest of the population is spread over a few small towns and many, in some cases, very small communities.
