The Saarbruecken Airport, international: Saarbrücken Airport called, is one of the smallest of the international airports in Germany. It is located in the Ensheim district, about 5 km as the crow flies east of downtown Saarbrücken.
background
In 2006/2007, the opening of the former military training area Zweibrücken as Zweibrücken Airport caused difficulties for Saarbrücken Airport for a short time. The airlines Germanwings and TuiFly relocated their flights from Saarbrücken to Zweibrücken and opened domestic routes there in direct competition with Saarbrücken. Air Berlin stayed at the airport and opened dozens of new routes in Saarbrücken. Luxair chose Saarbrücken Airport as its second center. The number of passengers has continued to rise. In November 2014, Zweibrücken Airport ceased operations and Germanwings and TuiFly came back here.
