Madeira
Due to the sharp right turn at the end of the approach phase and the possible strong crosswinds, Madeira airport is considered one of the most dangerous in the world. However, since the lengthening of the single track to 1,800 meters in 1986, no more accidents have occurred there.

Eat
The Madeiran table
Funchal is first and foremost a fishing port and the curious should not fail to visit the workers' market (Mercado dos Lavadores), a semi-covered market where fruits and vegetables abound but where tuna and swordfish are also sold (espadarte ) and especially espadas, these "swordfish" from the depths which are the delight of Madeiran tables. Meat lovers will be interested in espetadas, these skewers of marinated beef cooked on laurel branches. For dessert, stores offer bolo de caco, bread made with flour and sweet potato.
We prefer continental wine to local wine, except of course for the different versions of Madeira served as an aperitif or digestive: Malmsey (mild), Bual (medium-sweet), Verdelho (medium-dry), Sercial (dry) . To try: the poncha, a cocktail of sugar cane brandy, lemon juice and honey and the "brisa maracuja", a passion fruit lemonade or the local beer (Coral). A great meal can also end with a local aguardente. Unless you prefer a banana liqueur.
The whole range of restaurants is represented. A selection :
- Jango (rua da Santa Maria, 164-166). In the old town. It is advisable to arrive there at noon, because this small establishment is full in the evening.
- Jardins do Infante (avenida do Infante, 56). A very beautiful setting for very fine preparations.
- Casa Madeirense (Estrada Monumental, 153). Quality local cuisine.
- Caravela (avenida Mar e Comunidades Madeirenses, 15). For its espetada and its panoramic view of the port of Funchal.
- Quinta da Palmeira (avenida do Infante, 5). Very good cuisine offered in a residence built in 1763.
- Tokos (Estrada Monumental, 169). Fish specialties. Espada (black scabbard) with banana is particularly recommended. One must reserve.
To see
The island cannot be limited to its capital and it is necessary to seize the many excursion proposals (by coach, in 4 X 4) or to hire a taxi for the day or a car. Some will venture on part of the two thousand kilometers of paths that run along the levadas, these canals that irrigate the island. Others will decide to visit the ports of Machico or Camara de Lobos, Camacha famous for its wickerwork, Santana and its triangular houses, Porto Moniz and its natural swimming pools ... Or they will prefer to cross the strange plateau of Paul da Serra at 1 400 m altitude or enjoy the view from Pico do Arieiro (1 810 m), 2nd summit of the island. Despite the small size of the island, the landscapes are very varied: if the island deserves its name of island of flowers (its emblem is also the strelitzia or bird of paradise), some landscapes are more harsh.
We will also offer you excursions by helicopter or on a replica of the Santa Maria of Christopher Columbus.
As for golf enthusiasts, they will practice the courses of Palheiro Ferreiro (18 holes) and that of Santo da Serra (27 holes) with a breathtaking view of the bay of Machico and Sao Laurenço.
The walks in Funchal and the crossing of the island are also an excuse to buy souvenirs such as embroidery, basketwork, fruit liqueurs, wool or cotton sweaters as well as flowers, bulbs and plants that can be packaged for the trip. back You can find some great pictures of everything you can visit on the island at the following link: http://www.ile-madere.com/photosmadereindexwilkipedia.htm

- Tickets
- Euro banknotes are the same in all countries.
- Ordinary parts
- All euro area countries have issued coins with a distinctive national side on one side, and a common standard side on the other side. Coins can be used in all countries, regardless of the country of origin of the coin used, for example a one euro coin from Finland can be used in Portugal.
- Two euro commemorative coins
- They differ from normal two euro coins only on their "national" side and circulate freely as legal tender. Each country can produce a certain quantity of it as part of their normal parts production. There are also commemorative two euro coins "at European level". They are produced to commemorate special events, such as the anniversary of important treaties.
- Withdrawal of money
- Cash withdrawals from ATMs are billed at the same price as cash withdrawals in the country of origin for holders of a bank card from an account in a country in the euro zone. Money transfers between two accounts are also considered by banks as a transfer between two accounts in the same country.
Bank cards are generally accepted and there are many ATMs (Multibanco).
Housing
This island, which remains very popular with the British, claims quality tourism. The hotel stock has also been limited. The island offers prestigious hotels such as the very distinguished Reid's Palace, The Cliff Bay or the Savoy. Also very popular, the Quinta da Bela Vista on the heights of the city. To the west of Funchal there are many hotels facing the ocean. Outside Funchal you will find small hotels with beautiful gardens, such as the Atrio hotel near Calheta or Quinta do Arco on the north coast.
