Pueblos Mágicos - Pueblos Mágicos

Logo Pueblos Mágicos

A Mexican one Pueblo Magico is a place that you are pleasantly surprised by as a visitor, because the place is well-kept, because the residents are proud of their customs, because they keep their historical buildings in order, because there are good transport links to this place, because the people are proud of their specialty cuisine because the place is quite simply “enchanting”. In order for a village to have such characteristics, its residents usually need competent help, and this help is supposed to be provided by the “Pueblos Mágicos” tourism program.

The program

The Mexican is responsible for the Pueblos Mágicos program Secretaria de Turismo (SECTURE). It is the political "secretariat (government) for tourism" in Mexico. There are sub-sections for "Tourism Actions", "Tourism Planning" and "Innovation and Quality"

The Pueblos Mágicos program was launched in 2001 and had the task of encouraging smaller cities to show their visitors the beauty of their nature, their cultural wealth, their folklore, their cuisine and their handicrafts. The tourism managers have realized that sun and sand are not enough for a good tourism concept. Therefore, the places in the Pueblos Magicos program should show that they are unique and historically significant and that they can offer their visitors magical, magical experiences.

So far so good. Somehow we already know it, just under a different name. In Germany, the competition “Our village should become more beautiful” was launched in 1961 and was deliberately aimed at villages and small towns. But somehow it didn't quite work out: just adding more flowers, a few sheep and horses didn't make life in a village community any more attractive. The competition has since been renamed “Our village has a future” and the objective is moving away from a flower competition to improving the living space. It is questionable whether such a competition can even achieve that, but at least one tries again and again.

Something similar happened in Mexico. The program started in 2001, but after 9 years it was time to make some improvements. This included an increase in financial resources. This created some new jobs, at least in the tourism sector. In some ecotourism programs such a contribution was made for the entire region. In 2019, however, this again proved to be insufficient: without further allocation of funds, the program would not have continued. For the time being, however, it will continue with some grants. At the moment the focus is more on smaller, unknown places.

criteria

A village community can apply for this program

  • if the village has good transport links
  • if it is close to a major tourist destination
  • if it has historical or religious significance
  • when the population and the city administration are ready to cooperate.

The participating communities are usually not particularly large, so they are supported in promoting and modernizing SECTUR.

Pueblos Mágicos

The thing about uniqueness is not that easy. Almost every parish has a beautiful town hall, of course also a church (late baroque or in the style of the Churriguerism), also a market hall or a hacienda. And most of the buildings are built in the colonial style anyway. There is not much that is unique to be found there, not even on the beautiful beaches on the Mayan Riviera. Ecotourism is no longer really unique either. First of all, one after the other.
