Wiesbaden is the capital of the state Hesse at the Rhine and on the edge of the Taunus. On the Maaraue, which lies in the south of the urban area, the Main in the Rhine. There are numerous thermal springs in the center. Wiesbaden is embedded in the wine bliss Rheingau. On the other side of the Rhine is the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate Mainz. Both cities are part of the Rhine Main Area.
Districts
The three Wiesbaden districts of Mainz-Amöneburg, -Kastel and -Kostheim, which belonged to Mainz until 1945 and are still supplied with water, electricity and gas by the Mainz public utilities and are traversed by bus lines of the Mainz transport company, play a special role. Roman and Middle Ages
Wiesbaden was called "Aquae Mattiacorum" by the Romans. A first military post (earth fort) was built on the Heidenberg between 6 and 15 AD. A little later, with the expansion of the thermal baths, the development of a civil Roman settlement began. At the end of the 4th century the Alemanni took over the security of Wiesbaden as a bridgehead in Mainz, and a hundred years later the Franks began to settle. Already in 828/30 the place was called "Wisabada" for the first time.
Today's Wiesbaden, as well as today's Offenbach, were also popular destinations for traders, as the Rhine-Main area developed into a central hub of trade in the 9-16th centuries.
In the 13th century it was temporarily an imperial city until it was destroyed by the Archbishop of Mainz in 1242. From 1690 the city with its 730 inhabitants was expanded and re-fortified. In 1744 Prince Karl von Nassau-Usingen moved his residence to Biebrich Castle. Wiesbaden now became the seat of the government of the principality, later of the Duchy of Nassau (1806 to 1866).
19th century - historicism - world spa town
In 1800 the city had 2,240 inhabitants, in 1905 there were 101,000. During this time the city developed into an international health resort and attracted many wealthy spa guests and citizens. It was considered a "world spa town". The cure was an opportunity to see and be seen.
The cityscape was shaped by representative residential buildings, hotel palaces and elegant villas, which were then joined by the new Kurhaus and theater.
At the end of the 18th century, gambling spread and the economy continued to grow.
From around 1800 AD the great change occurred with Dyckerhoff and Fresenius. Other important personalities in Wiesbaden's industrial history are Heinrich Albert, Ludwig Beck, Otto Heinrich Adolf Henkell, Fritz Kalle, Wilhelm Kalle and Wilhelm von Opel. These gentlemen drove the industry forward between 1800 and around 1950 and made other people follow them.
20th and 21st centuries - congress and state capital
Only a small part in the center of the city was destroyed in World War II. The magnificent houses and squares still shape the city today. It no longer enjoys its reputation as a spa town, but as a congress and culture town.

The Frankfurt am Main airport is 37 kilometers by road from Wiesbaden. The S-Bahn S8 and S9 connects the airport regional train station directly with Wiesbaden main train station. ICEs run to Dresden via the airport long-distance train station.
By train
Provincial train station with a pompous facadeThis is what the Frankfurter Rundschau called Wiesbaden's main train station (built in 1906) during its station test. It was a long time ago when an hourly IC train from Cologne to Frankfurt stopped at the Wiesbaden Sackbahnhof. As in imperial times (platform 1 was reserved for Kaiser Wilhelm's train with its own entrance), the state capital wanted to have the large connection again and implemented a double-track branch of the high-speed railway line Cologne - Frankfurt Airport, on which two pairs of trains run from Monday to Friday today .
Wiesbaden Central Station is served by another ICE line: Dresden - Leipzig - Erfurt - Frankfurt am Main - Airport - Mainz - Wiesbaden (every 2 hours). Otherwise the Stadt-Express runs from Frankfurt am Main to Koblenz. Regional trains run over Mainz to Darmstadt and to Niedernhausen, partly further to Limburg on the Lahn.
One leaves every half hour Train: the S1 via Mainz-Kastel and Frankfurt-Höchst to Rödermark-Ober-Roden, the S8 via Mainz-Hbf and the S9 via Mainz-Kastel to Frankfurt Airport and further to Hanau. The S-Bahn from Wiesbaden all go through Frankfurter and Offenbach City. You can travel a little faster between Wiesbaden and Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (same price) with the VIAS trains (RB10), which are air-conditioned and only stop twice on this route.
The last departure from Frankfurt Central Station with the S1 is 12:12 am. The S8 via Flukhafen and Mainz Hbf leaves every hour at night from 12:17 a.m. Rail traffic from the Rheingau will be stopped before midnight. Last train from Rüdesheim at 10:53 p.m.
Accessibility - A terminus station should actually be barrier-free, but the floor height of the S-Bahn is higher than the platform and that of the regional trains is lower than the platform. So ramps have to be unfolded.
From the main train station to the city center
It is approx. 2 km or 3-4 bus stops from the main train station to the city center. The bus platform stop B. is on Bahnhofstrasse behind the traffic lights. Bus lines 4, 14, 27 and 45 go to the town hall (“Dernsches site”) and to the pedestrian shopping area (“Kirchgasse”). To the State Theater and Kurhaus, take lines 1 and 8 (“Kurhaus / Theater”), which continue to the northern end of the pedestrian zone (“Webergasse”) and to Kranz- / Kochbrunnenplatz (“Kochbrunnen”).
By bus
The long-distance bus stop is located in Salzbachstraße, to the side of the main train station, with several connection options (e.g. to Berlin, Munich or Würzburg). The next long-distance bus stations are Mainz and Frankfurt.

Buses and suburban trains
Wiesbaden, Mainz, Hochheim and Walluf form a tariff zone in the Rhein-Main transport association (RMV) (price level 3, single trip € 2.80, (As of Jan. 2018). Collective cards reduce the price of the journey to € 2.24. Short-haul tickets are available for € 1.75 (applies to 3 stations). The district of Main-Bingen belongs to Rhine-Nahe local transport network (RNN). There are transitional tariffs between the two associations, which are used in all MVG buses and trams and in all buses of the ESWE traffic and the Omnibus traffic Rhein-Nahe and apply to all local trains (RB, S-Bahn).

Cycling in the city - dangerous or just unreasonable?
In Wiesbaden, many citizens do not dare to take their bike out of the cellar. They think cycling in the city is too dangerous. The Frankfurter Rundschau compiled a list of shortcomings with readers. In the last 10 years, cycle lanes have only been created in Bahnhofstrasse and Taunusstrasse, and these are often blocked. It is better to avoid the main traffic axes for through traffic. Since Wiesbaden does not have a north bypass or a complete ring road, all commuters from the surrounding areas have to drive through the city (160,000 cars per day). The traffic-calmed side streets are more suitable for cycling, and you can also see the splendid houses of the Wilhelminian era there. The Wiesbaden courier also classifies the cycle path network as poor, and cars are regularly parked in the cycle lanes. The bus lanes were only released for cyclists after a lawsuit in court. Cyclists have to wait at red at the special traffic lights for buses and block buses with right of way.

Castles, chateaux and palaces

- 11 Wiesbaden City Palace. Built in 1840 by the Dukes of Nassau. After 1866 it was the almost annual summer residence of the Prussian kings. The building, which is rather inconspicuous from the outside, surprises inside with its beauty of the staircase, the two rotundas and the ducal rooms. Today it is the representative building of the Hessian state parliament. The Hessian Parliament met in the music hall from 1946 to 1962. From the music hall you got to the ducal box of the former riding school, which was demolished in 1960 due to the new building of the plenary hall wing. Instead of the rectangular extension, a four-wing door was installed to the foyer of the plenary hall, which was inaugurated in 1962. This new building was demolished in January 2005 and replaced by a new building. If you open the four-winged door of the music hall, you experience a culture shock and step over two centuries. Many rooms are still in their original state. The sumptuously furnished castle rooms in the left wing can no longer be visited free of charge every Saturday at 3 p.m. due to renovation work. - 1 Kurhaus Wiesbaden. The Kurhaus, built in 1810, was not enough for the global spa town. In 1905 the demolition began and in 1907 the new prestigious magnificent building was inaugurated, with its concert and event hall with 1350 seats. The former central Kursaal of the first Kurhaus, which can accommodate 400 people, was reproduced in the north wing. - 18 Old Town Hall. The old town hall is the oldest building in the city and was originally a half-timbered building.

The memorial was erected by collecting donations from the Wiesbaden population on the occasion of Wilhelm I's many visits. The unveiling took place on October 16, 1894 by his grandson Wilhelm II.

- Spa gardens· The original complex was built in 1810-12 following the construction of the first spa house by the court gardener Schweitzer. An expansion took place in 1838. The park was redesigned in 1855/56 into an English landscape garden by the Biebrich horticultural director Friedrich Thelemann. Magnolias, azaleas, rhododendrons and bald cypresses grow here. There is a fountain in the pond with an artificial island. The concert shell is richly decorated with ornaments. The pillars of the old Kurhaus and a bust of Dostoevsky stand at the Nice spot. - Warm dam: · Friedrich Thelemann, Biebrich Horticultural Director, planned this public green area on behalf of Duke Adolf V in 1859/60. The area at the back of the theater was bought by the city with profits from the Wiesbaden casino and designed as a landscape park with a pond.
- Rambachtal and Aukammtal - The extension of the Kurpark is the elongated Rambachtal up to Sonnenberg Castle. The Aukammtal branches off to the east; it leads past the thermal baths, turns into a meadow landscape and ends at the apothecary garden. Coffee and cake can be enjoyed in the orangery of the nursery.
- 26 Apothecary garden, · In the Aukammtal spa area. The optically loosely designed garden with its herbs, shrubs and trees grouped according to medicinal application areas gives the visitor an interesting insight and at the same time a return to the forces of nature and the benefits of plants for human health. - 27 Nerotal, a park laid out in the tradition of English landscape gardens at the end, was developed by city architect Felix Genzmer in the years 1897/98 as "Duchess Elisabeth Park" between the end of Taunusstrasse and the Nerobergbahn in a meadow valley.

Wiesbaden hat eine lange Fußgängerzone mit den beiden zentralen Einkaufsachsen, der Kirchgasse und der Langgasse. Hier sind die üblichen Bekleidungsgeschäfte vertreten, wie man sie in anderen Städten Deutschlands auch findet. Auch die bekannteren Schmuck- und Fast-Food-Ketten sind hier in großer Anzahl vertreten. Wie es sich für eine Großstadt gehört, findet man in Wiesbaden auch die traditionellen Warenhäuser Karstadt und Galeria Kaufhof.
Im Jahr 2008 entstand mit dem Luisenforum das erste Einkaufszentrum in Wiesbaden in den Räumlichkeiten einer ehemaligen Karstadt-Filiale. Hier befinden sich neben Einkaufsmöglichkeiten des täglichen Bedarfs auch Modeketten und Cafés. Das Luisenforum verfügt über ein eigenes Parkhaus auf der anderen Seite der Schwalbacher Straße, mit dem es über eine oberirdische Passage verbunden ist. Im Parkhaus befinden sich einige Schnellimbisse, das Bürgerbüro und die Mobilitätszentrale der ESWE.
Der Versuch, mit dem Lilien-Carré auf dem Gelände der ehemaligen Hauptpost (neben dem Hauptbahnhof) ein zweites Einkaufszentrum in Wiesbaden zu etablieren, kann als gescheitert angesehen werden. Seit 2015 standen die Hälfte der Ladengeschäfte leer, ein angekündigter Umbau verzögerte sich. Eine Besserung trat 2018 nach dem Umbau in Kraft, zwei große Lebensmittelläden von einem Discounter und ein Vollsortimenter sind eingezogen und die Passage fimiert jetzt unter dem neuen Namen lili.
Wiesbadener Spezialitäten muss man etwas suchen, am ehesten findet man diese in der Wilhelmstraße und der anschließenden Taunusstraße. Der Schokoladenladen „Kunder“ an der Wilhelmstraße ist einer der ältesten Läden Wiesbadens.

Wer bei den milden Temperaturen Wiesbadens draußen sitzen möchte findet viele Restaurants in der Goldgasse und in der Grabenstraße vor dem Neubau des Hessischen Landtags. Auch vor dem Kurhaus lädt Kufflers Gastronomie zum Speisen ein, während im Kurpark bei schönem Wetter der Biergarten geöffnet hat.

Wer billig etwas essen möchte und dennoch die Qualität nicht zu sehr leiden lassen möchte findet in Wiesbaden ein paar kleinere Läden, die meistens nur von Wiesbadenern selbst gekannt werden.In der Moritzstraße (Verlängerung der Fußgängerzone) sind gute und preiswerte Döner-Imbiss-Stuben zu finden.Ein Insidertipp ist das asiatische Restaurant Kaiserkrone (Hagenauer Str. 40 65203 Wiesbaden).Dort gibt es ein abwechslungsreiches Buffet zu erschwinglichen Preisen.

Die "Imbissbude" befindet sich auf dem Gelände einer Gärtnerei am Ortsansässigen Friedhof (daher die Namensgebung). Wiesbaden ist ein Gesundheitsstandort und das schon seit tausenden von Jahren. Seine noch 15 Mineralquellen werden für Behandlungen im Bereich des Bewegungsapparates und der inneren Medizin genutzt.Es gibt öffentliche und private Thermalbäder, so z.B. die Kaiser-Friedrich-Therme (Saunalandschaft), das Aukammtalbad (Therme mit großem Außenbecken und Sauna), das Badehotel Schwarzer Bock in dem man auch das Bad nutzen kann ohne Hotelgast zu sein.
