Waters in Europe - Gewässer in Europa

Naturally, waters do not always adhere to man-made boundaries. That is why they often make it difficult for us Wikivoyage authors to place them in our breadcrumb navigation. But because they often have their own tourist destination and Itineraries there is this travel guide.

Rivers

Rivers are among the oldest transportation routes known to man.

Before the invention of the railroad, they were, if navigable, the most important route for transporting cargo. That is why they have been connected to each other with channels. Cities and production areas were also connected with canals if they were not already on a river.

Today only the largest rivers and canals are important routes for freight transport. The smaller canals and rivers are often still used for recreational traffic today. Therefore, they have become tourist destinations themselves.
