Heilbronn was first mentioned historically in 741 as "Helibrunna". In 1281 it received city rights and became a free imperial city. During the Peasant Wars he fought here Neckartaler heap with Götz von Berlichingen, who was arrested as a prisoner in 1519. During the Thirty Years War, the city was occupied alternately by the French and Swedes, as well as the imperial troops. The city flourished in the Rococo period. In 1802 the independence as an imperial city was over, Heilbronn, like the other surrounding imperial cities, fell to Württemberg.
When the Neckar was made navigable, industrialization began: the Heilbronn paper mills contributed to the fact that Heilbronn had most of the factories in Württemberg. In 1892 Heilbronn was the first city in the world to be connected to an electricity supply: from Lauffen on the Neckar out was directed by Oskar von Miller the first three-phase power transmission line to Frankfurt am Main was built. In 1933 it became the neighboring town Boeckingen incorporated, to follow in 1938 Sontheim and Neckargartach. Heilbronn had grown to over 70,000 inhabitants.
The city suffered a devastating air raid during World War II on December 4, 1944, in which almost all buildings in the old town are destroyed and thousands lost their lives.
After the Second World War, the municipalities became in the course of the municipality reform Klingenberg, Kirchhausen, Biberach, Frankenbach and Horkheim incorporated. This made Heilbronn a major city with well over 100,000 inhabitants.

They connect the numerous tram stops in downtown Heilbronn with the cities in the surrounding area, such as Karlsruhe, Öhringen, Neckarsulm, Sinsheim and Mosbach.

Churches
- 1 Kilian's Church, Kiliansplatz
- 2 Teutonic monastery in the Deutschhof
- 3 Nikolaikirche (evangelical), Sülmerstrasse 72. The Nikolaikirche is mentioned for the first time in 1351, from 1524 Lutheran services are celebrated in the Nikolaikirche (however, the Lutheran preacher of the Nikolaikirche has to leave the city in October 1525 because of the peasant war). Five years later, Heilbronn finally joins the Reformation, the Nikolaikirche is no longer the property of the Catholic Church, but the city. From 1544 the building was used as a children's church for all of Heilbronn's children, before the Nikolaikirche was quickly converted into an armory between 1622 and 1699 on the occasion of the Thirty Years' War. After the end of this use, the church is neglected, but because Heilbronn citizens are committed to the restoration of the same, it can again serve as a place of worship from 1706 onwards. In the 18th century, funerals usually take place here. From 1802 to 1804 the Nikolaikirche is also a school, in 1805 French soldiers seize the church and convert it into a hospital. From 1820 the building was rented out and used in a wide variety of ways: as a workshop, as a fire station, as a polling station and assembly hall and finally even as a gym. However, citizens collect donations and want the church to be used again according to its original purpose - which is achieved in 1851. During the air raid on Heilbronn in 1944, the Nikolaikirche was destroyed down to the walls. The reconstruction of the church was completed in 1951 and has been a place for worship and prayer ever since.Open: Tues. 2–6 p.m., Wed. 4–6 p.m., Thu. 2–6 p.m., Fri. 3–6 p.m., Sat. 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Sun. 9 a.m.– 10.30 a.m. Service: Sunday, 9.30 a.m.

- 19 Forest heather. A local recreation area with a great history. From 1951 the forest clearing was used as a military training area and from 1953 also as an airfield for American armed forces. While the area of Heilbronn was initially open to citizens, in 1974 work began to seal off the area with watchtowers and fences. The reason for this was the stationing of nuclear Pershing missiles on the Waldheide. In an emergency, these should have been used in the nuclear war against the Eastern Bloc. The Heilbronn people became increasingly aware of the danger and organized themselves in numerous human chains and demonstrations against further nuclear armament. The peace movement culminated in Easter March on the Waldheide 1983, attended by 30,000 people. But it happened as it had to: on January 11, 1985, a rocket accident occurred with three dead. Only after the end of the Cold War was the area renatured and has since been open to the public again.

kitchen
As expected, the Heilbronn cuisine is traditionally Swabian and German. These are particularly noteworthy and typical for the city Heilbronn favorite dish (a mixture of the "best" of Swabian cuisine: Buabaspitzle (Potato noodles), spaetzle, Maultaschen and pork loin in a mushroom sauce with lettuce, the Heilbronn favorite dish is often even served in a specially designed plate) and that Böckinger field shouting (named after the Heilbronn district of Böckingen, elsewhere under the name "Gaisburger March" known. traditional Swabian stew with Potato wedge, spaetzle and beef).
The Heilbronn people's favorite drink is undoubtedly the one Wine. With the Cooperative winery Heilbronn-Erlenbach-Weinsberg the largest single winegrowers' cooperative in Germany is located here. So it is not surprising that the mountains around Heilbronn, above all the Wartberg, are characterized by viticulture. As almost everywhere in Württemberg, the cultivation of red wine varieties predominates, the Trollinger is their main representative. But also numerous other varieties, such as Riesling, Lemberger, Black Riesling or Kerner and even newer ones like Acolon can be found. The list is not exhaustive. The Heilbronners explain the fact that Württemberg wine is rather unknown in the world as follows: the wine is of such a quality that people like to drink it on the spot. Often there is not much left for export.
- 1 Wine Villa (old Faisst'sche villa), Cäcilienstraße 66, 74072 Heilbronn. Tel.: 49(0)7131 676712, Fax: 49(0)7131 676713, Email: [email protected]. Classicist villa run by the local wineries. However, beer is also popular - the traditional beer brand Cluss (existing since 1865) and the Heilbronner Kronen-Bräu (since 1894) have their roots in the city.
Heilbronn has also owned the Hellblöms its own cult drink. Based on a scene from Heinrich von Kleist's play The little girl from Heilbronn, in which the main character Käthchen rests under an elderberry bush, it is about an elderberry juice spritzer. The drink is available in some restaurants, beer gardens, cafes and bars.
